Layering a rug over carpet in living room
I’ve been struggling to find a rug that would not conflict with the wall art and that goes over the carpet to highlight my sofa a bit. This rug arrived today only, would love to hear what you all think about this one. Does it conflict with the wall art?
Do you have any rug suggestions?
The living room is work in progress, a leather chair is also coming to make it more conversational.

PRO2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoIMO you're heading in the wrong color direction. You want some black to reinforce but not compete with the art which is stellar.
The cream white doesn't really work with your sectional.
This Kite Rug below is from West Elm. Not sure if they still sell it. It would be a great contrast to the jute on the floor.

Comments (2)For years I had oriental area rugs over carpet....until I got up my courage to rip out the carpet!...andI found that both carpet and hand woven rugs have a "grain"...a way the tufts lie.....and certain rooms have a traffic pattern which affects the way a rug moves. Even now on bare floors my diningroom rug moves south! I think it has to do with the fact that when people walk one way they are walking fast and when they walk the other way they are walking slowly. Comments (5)We have light coloured maple floors, the same coffee table as you have ( with the matching corner table) and a rock fireplace with the same colours as you have and low narrow windows such as you. We added an area rug which really helped with warming the place up and for window coverings we used California Shutters with a louvre of 2 1/2". We wanted to keep with a more clean look and my DH insisted on window coverings which I didn't want to do. Our dining room is set off as yours is from your living area and we have a similar curtain rod with darker curtains as well. Because our windows have the white framing the shutters look fine even though you see the two sets of windows at the same time. Comments (10)Yes here is the picture, In the same color. no eating or drinking , mainly conversational. So we r having four of these sofas. 2 on each of the facing walls. The cream 3 seater that I already have will go on the back wall. (we also considered keeping the cream sofas in the same spot as they r right now, and just putting two of these chocolate sofas on the opposite wall , or one chocolate 3 seater opposite cream 3 seater, and one chocolate 2 seater opposite the cream seater. My husband says it would look fine but I think they would look odd. ) no coffee tables , if I get space for end table I would, v small ones. Like those mini round ones, but really they won’t serve any purpose. since i m filling each facing walls with two 3-seaters, I may get space for only two chairs....See Morelayering a runner over another carpet

OMG thanks for all the suggestions and pictures. I’m def going to get something black now. The base is not jute though, it’s the high pile carpet below that. Jute rug is what I was trying to layer the carpet with.
I am also confused with the size of the rug since there’s carpet underneath that. The carpet is around 12.5’ to 10.5’. Do you have any suggestions on the size? Also attaching the picture of how it looks now.

2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoI agree with the idea that adding some black could work. As another option, you could keep the rug and just bring in a coffee table in black.
Here I used a black ottoman with a bronze metal base - which is a style that I like; and also an ottoman style is the best option if you have children or children visiting.
Brings in the black in a subtle way and doesn’t compete with the great art.- 2 years ago
2 years agoI do like a darker rug, but I agree that it shouldn't be too patterened to take away from the art. Something with texture and little to no pattern.
On the other hand a thick jute rug would also look good and has the benefit of being very durable, versatile, and would lay much better. Have you tried Lowes for one?

The irregular shapes lend themselves to great layering!Way better than the forced look of rectangle atop rectangle : (
