Pools & Spas Design Dilemma

How do we add lighting to an existing in-ground pool?

We are renovating our backyard and our 2002 rectangular pool will be getting new coping later this week. Can we add lighting under the new pavers while the top is "open"? if so how & what products? We are glad for a slight delay in between the removal of the broken concrete and the addition of the pavers. How do we make the most of it?

Photo attached. there is only 1 light in the deep end of the pool.

You don't want to drill through the wall of the pool, so I think your best option would be LED strip lights that install beneath the "nose" of the new coping. There are a lot of products out there; be sure you specify one that's appropriate for a wet location and can withstand the chemicals (chlorine, saline, ozone, etc.) your pool uses, and be sure to use a licensed electrician who has experience installing these products. If you are planning to re-plaster, consider Jandy Hydrocool LED nicheless lights.

We have been using these for close to 18 years. It would require core drilling through the wall. We always add lighting when patios are torn up. If the spa does not have a light, this would work well.

Also consider upgrading the piping system.

If you not re-plastering, consider a fiber optic strip light around the perimeter beneath the coping.

A qualified electrician will know the proper codes in regards to swimming pools and any lighting to be added.

??? 1. Can I replace the lights with water in the pool/spa? If so, how do I do that ??? Yes, this can either be very easy or very hard. You never know until you start doing it. After finding the termination of the lamp tail (either the weatherproof switch or the computer relay) disconnect the lamp tail and tie a pull wire or heavy duty twine to it. Pull the lamp tail from the pool until you get the twine in hand, fasten the new lamp tail to the string and pull back to the switch box, then cut, strip, and terminate. ??? 2. Can I synchronize all three lights ??? Yes, if you terminate the pool and spa tails to the same switch or relay they will synchronize. ??? 3. Why do they sell the lights with long cords? Won't I just plug them in the existing wiring ??? For your and all your other swimmers safety, the termination of the lamps tail is moved away from the pool and at an elevation higher than the level of the pool water. Although this is something a homeowner may be capable of doing I still suggest calling a pool professional to handle it for you. This is a job that can be either VERY EASY or VERY PROBLEMATIC. I did not see you post the only relevant information needed: what is the salt level of the pool? Saying you have no chlorine is not an indication of needing more salt. It is not uncommon for heavy chlorine demand to outpace how much a chlorine generator can generate in 24 hours (if you want to see how much chlorine each salt system is capable of producing in 24 hours read this: Which salt chlorine system can generate the most chlorine in 24 hours?) In times of heavy chlorine demand simply add some liquid chlorine to your pool to help the salt system keep up. Additionally you need to be testing your water for pH, free chlorine, total chlorine, total alkalinity, cyanuric acid and TDS (total dissolved solids). Without knowing these numbers for your pool, in addition to the ppm of salt that you have, you will only be guessing as to what the problem is and how to fix it.

If there is a neutral available in your switch box, this could be done fairly easily. Electrical theory doesn't vary from country to country: the effective circuit to do this will be the same anywhere. Problem is, the exact details of what type of hardware you use to mount this to that, boxes, covers, clamps, color codes, things like that - they're all going to vary. Electrically, I can use products intended for use in the US on your lights and get the right effect, safely - but I guaran-damn-tee it'd never meet any kind of code :) Exactly what country are you in, so that I can do a brief bit of research on your wiring style before I give you advice you can't use?

How hard/costly is is it to add a spa to this in-ground pool?

There is no problem adding a gunite spa to your existing pool. A structural engineer should be consulted to layout the specifications to allow for this. And an experienced builder to perform the work. We have added concrete benches and steps to concrete pools as old 50 years without any issues. Another option are pre-made fiberglass spas designed for adding to existing pools. We have installed many on both concrete and vinyl pools. There is a company in Orlando that manufactures them-even with completed plumbing. Piping will have to be run to the pool equipment from the spa which means removing a portion of the patio to do so. The patio, of course would have to be re-set. An additional pump for the jets and if desired an air blower for more bubbles. Cost varies in different states-sorry cannot give you a ballpark based on your location.

Thanks for the responses! Since we only had a 2-day gap between the cement removal and the pavers arrival, we have added conduit to be under the pavers that will allow our electrician to runstrip lighting under the nose of the new pavers. And that tip has allowed us to be sure that there is enough nose to cover the lights. With the electrical run through the conduit, we can add the management of these lights to the same location as the other pool functions. Here's hoping it all looks as we hope when its finished.
