I have a Fukushu kumquat on C35 and several on Flying dragon. Just showing some graft unions.

Flying dragon seems to be more prone to weird twists than the generally upright/straight C-35.

This is a Washington navel on FD, and it was the tree that started it all in winter 2009. All the original nursery-based growth died back in 2010 as I was learning what the heck I had gotten into. Fortunately, it put out a new, singular stem which became the trunk of the tree I have today (after a lot of learning!). This is the photo of that singular stem flushing out with the rootstock visible:

I've noticed that the bud has been very strangely deformed, and I can't tell if it was a chip, T-bud, or some other graft type, but the line is definitely visible on the 2023 photo!

Looking good Tom. I see the quarter in front of your tree and I realize how much the quarter has shrunk with this inflation.

Yes it does have a short half-life and an insecticidal life or 3-10 days. That is far far shorter than MANY other highly used insecticides. Certainly not 15 years as I have seen claimed before. As previously stated, we have a full community of insects in our plants, and in our soil, and we use it to control Japanese Beetle damage during the 6 weeks or so the adults are present. ENVIRONMENTAL FATE Carbaryl has a short residual life on treated crops. The insecticide remains at the application site, where it is slowly taken into the plant and metabolized. Insecticidal properties are retained for 3-10 days. Loss of carbaryl is due to evaporation and uptake into plants. Breakdown by sunlight does not appear to be significant. Degradation of carbaryl in the soil is mostly due to sunlight and bacterial action. It is bound by organic matter and can be transported in soil runoff. Carbaryl has a half-life of 7 days in aerobic soil and 28 days in anaerobic soil (9). Degradation of carbaryl in crops occurs by hydrolysis inside the plants. It has a short residual life of less than two weeks. The metabolites of carbaryl have lower toxicity to humans than carbaryl itself. pip, the same can be said for most citrus grafted to FD - host-graft issues over time leading to failure. Fruitmentor, the CDFA required all grafting to be done under screen 2 years ago. So, this has indeed, come to pass already. Don't think the ACP had that much bearing on their choice of rootstock, as they could certainly grow their own seedling rootstock themselves under screen to use. I suspect it is due to the exceptional success of C35. Most of my trees are on C35, I have recommended it consistently on this list for some time. Many commercial orchards here in California are switching to C35 as well. I particularly like C35 for its better tolerance to phytophthora, which is an issue for those in S. Orange County/N. Poncirus vs Flying Dragon rootstock size question

Flying Dragon is one dwarfing variety of Poncirus trifoliata. There are several others available as rootstocks -- large-flowered and Rubidoux, to name two. They will produce a tree considerably larger than Flying Dragon, but still somewhat smaller than average for the genus Citrus understocks. But I'd not call them "dwarf" by any means. It really depends on your climate and the scion variety what their ultimate size will be.

Do not use neem oil in the soil , use neem seed meal , just sprinkle around the plant and work in the first few inches , or use Mosquito dunks broken up to a powder the same way. Diatomatious earth spread on top helps too .... Most important is not to keep your soil so wet, actually letting the top few inches dry out will help

In my limited experience using Flying Dragon and Citrumelo as rootstock, I've found grafts on Flying Dragon much slower to 'take' and grow. The hybrid rootstocks are vigorous and give the scion a big boost. Problem is, over time, the ones on hybrid rootstock soon outgrow your space.

Haha Steve. If I'd place a penny next to it, you'd need a microscope to see it!

And Dave, you are definitely correct. The FD tree has remained manageable this whole time, while my C-35/other trifoliate hybrids require diligent pruning to keep manageable.
