rift white oak sample door

Is this a normal characteristic of rift white oak or is this an imperfection that can possibly occur if I decide on this type of wood? I’m referring the the vertical lines. It looks like if the wood is separating.

Are these custom? If so you can have the sample remade but ask for the pores to be filled. It will add cost and possibly ruin the look, won’t know until you see a sample.

Sample is from Shiloh. Will the open grain continue to separate as the wood expands and contracts?

I just had a rift and quarter sawn mix floor installed. There's a lot of rift pieces that I thought were quarter and vice versa. My builder could tell better than me which was which and could show me the angle of the grain on the end to show for sure. Oak is tricky, I think. I have several logs I need to have milled (don't worry, I hugged them before they came down). I've asked several mills about quarter sawing them and they say you don't know if the wood will have rays until you start sawing.

The end product when you saw logs at the mill is only slightly under the sawyer's control, because the growth rings/grain vary at points throughout the log. Only riftsawn veneer is a reliable way to get that one particular grain format, because they cull through hundreds of pieces and get the veneer mill running just right. In 1890, they had enormous white oak tree trunks to pick through, which yielded unimaginably (in 2000's) wide and flecky planks of Q-sawn. If you want picture perfect matched rift grain, either use veneer or be prepared to have the costs skyrocket, because the cabinetmaker will have to pick through piles of lumber to get the best matching grain.

Linelle: your description perfectly captures the difference between my sample and what I'm looking for! My sample is flat and lifeless. What I want is for the wood to look rich and alive. The example I chose may be red oak. I know white oak can be just as lively as red oak though. There are plenty of QS white oak photos that look rich and full of figure. It's the rift white oak that I cannot find good photos of! ILoveRed: I have seen the photo of the tall cabinets in the first kitchen and it is gorgeous! It doesn't show the detail of the wood as clearly as I need but I'll add it to my photos. The second kitchen you found has some really good photos. Thanks so much for finding that for me! omelet: I'm not an expert either but I agree with you - the cut determines the figure of the wood more than the finish. But take a look at the figure on the unstained backside of my sample door: Unstained, it has a lot of wonderful richness and unexpected fleck in too. If they didn't leave the backside unstained I would have never known that RS white oak could look so lively and have such lovely figure. In one of my other threads, we seem to have figured out that they used a mix of woods and cuts on this sample door. The side rails look like RS white oak, top and bottom rails QS white oak and center panel is plain sawn red oak. That's a fantastic suggestion to post on the flooring forum! Off I go...

@eliseharrison The caption in your first says something about being treated with "oil," which is another option for finishing, using Waterlox or another tung-oil based treatment rather than lacquer. An oil treatment that has tung oil as its base like Waterlox won't yellow as much as an oil treatment that has linseed oil as a primary ingredient. These oil finishes have to be re-applied and maintained, but I've done a fair amount of research on them, and Waterlox original finish is what we're planning to do in our kitchen on cherry cabinetry. A few cabinet companies use oil finishes like Waterlox exclusively. It creates a very natural surface, but the ambering and yellowing will still occur over time to an extent even with this method. If you wanted to go with a whitewashed finish, then yes, that might work for you to get the color you want, but it won't look natural. It obscures the depth and sheen of the natural wood if it is done sufficiently to alter the color permanently to obscure the natural ambering of the wood. Some people really like this method and have used it to get the light neutral color they want without going for a total painted finish. Just be sure to view samples in person so you're sure you like it. There is a type of white oak harvested in Europe that has a low tannin content and ages to a neutral, silvery tone, but it is expensive and difficult to obtain in the United States in quantities large enough for cabinetry work. If the budget is generous, you could look into that option with a water-based, non-yellowing lacquer finish to get a natural white wood look.

If the second photo shows a vertical separation in a door running on the right from top to bottom, it's junk. Can you also add some picts from back a bit to get the whole sample.

I returned the door earlier today. The back was covered with a paper with door info. so I’m not sure how the back looked. Picture below is the only picture I took showing the full front of door sample. Does the same occur with quarter sawn oak?

North American white and red oak have open grain. It's especially present when the boards are flat cut. When you stain the wood to get a medium color like your door, the grain turn black from the stain. Rift and quarter-sawn cut the boards at an angle that minimizes the open grain and the black grain pattern. To deal with that you can fill the grain with a light color paint or any color lighter than black. Cerise is a technique. Also pickling. Then you can add a topcoat of clear finish. The door you show looks like it got a light grain fill and a satin topcoat. It looks good in the full picture. As an aside, European and French Oak are different oak species with more dense less open grain. You can see that on IKEA Vedhamn doors. VEDHAMN oak fronts - IKEA

IKEA uses European Oak. They are about the only place where you can get European Oak cabinet doors and drawer fronts in the US. . . .and you'll save a lot of money.

DOCA cabinets in Spain also makes cabinets. DOCA: Kitchen furniture and wardrobes of the highest quality (docakitchens.com) i think they have a rep on Long Island.
