Easy Orchids??
Comments (11)Thanx for your replies! I asked my mother and she has the all about orchids book and is going to let me borrow it. Of course the green thumb theory is bogus, most of the time ignorance and lack of care is why anything dies be it plant or animal. And I havent' taken it personal, kinda hard to given that I don't know you, you have exactly zero impact on my day to day life and I havent given your words any sway lol. But you are right and I can't fault you for being peeved. I have looked online at a few different sources as far as orchids go. I have seen some absolutely gorgeous plants but I figured I would ask people who have some experience to see if they had any idea what i had rather than toil through and see what I ended up with. One quick question, do orchids ship well? I had a bonsai that never recovered from it so wanted to make sure. I don't have alot of time to dedicate to orchids solely given that I am also starting a few other plant projects this year and so wanted the type of flowers I had but no clue what they were. Oh and another thing, you mentioned that phalaenopsis are sold at places like Lowes and Home Depot but that they generally lack knowledge for thier care. If I were to go to such a place to find a few orchids, is there anything I should look for to make sure my plant isn't on the downslope? Thans again for the replies =)...See MoreMaryland Orchid Society Show and Sale! March 9 - 11

Comments (4)Check out the University of California at Santa Cruz Botanic Garden, and they do have an on-site nursery as well. There is a great retail nursery in Watsonville, Ca. called Sierra Azul Nursery, which also has great display gardens. For prime succulents, there is a good nursery in Carmel Valley, I forget what the name of it is, but it would be in the yellow pages. If you will be passing through Morro Bay/San Luis Obispo, there used to be a really cute succulent nursery near downtown, not sure if it is still there, and the new Botanic Garden just north of San Luis Obispo on Hwy One is also worth checking out. Also, in Santa Barbara proper, don't miss Alice Keck Park in town, the civic center with its gorgeous mature palm plantings, and also the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden above the mission in the hills. Also, there is a really nice retail nursery in Carpenteria right off Hwy 101 that has a full range of palms, succulents, etc, and also has great display gardens. Maybe someone else who actually lives in Carmel Valley, Morro Bay or Carpenteria can chime in with the actual names of the nurseries that I can't remember the names of......See MoreOrchid Growers/Farms/Nurseries on Long Island?
Comments (6)The only one I know of is on the site of the old, and much missed, Roslyn Nursery in Dix Hills, but I don't know the name or address and it didn't seem to be open to the public last time I was there. Rita Cohen has retired from her nursery, Orchid Art, so perhaps your best option is to call one or two of the regular plant nurseries that you're planning to visit and see if they know of any growers, you never know!
