basement steps along concrete wall HELP
Comments (3)XPS is needed on the wall next to the stairs? Matter of priorities. Appearance or thermal efficiency? If it's going to be a fully-finished basement, I would let that part of the wall go without. Otherwise, the drywall will hang over the stairs and will be next to impossible to trim neatly. Working with older homes is a series of compromises! BTW, an inexpensive low-pile commercial carpet will do wonders for that staircase....See MorePainting Concrete basement wall
Comments (3)For the walls, I would just use a gloss latex house paint. Gloss will be easier to clean and also make the room seem a bit larger. Brush on the first coat to make sure don't miss any surface imperfections, and you could roll on the second coat with a fairly thick (1/2") roller. For a small laundry room, I'd probably go with a single sheet of vinyl flooring, but the Allure looks like it'd do the job. Comments (1)Can you see any floor joists? Do the floor joists run perpendicular to the wall? Is this wall near the middle of the house? A picture of the floor joists at the wall would be helpful. If it is load bearing you should consult an engineer to make a plan. If not load bearing, it can be removed with a concrete saw / blade and a sledgehammer. If using concrete saw, plug into a GFCI outlet and employ a garden hose (and probably a friend to hold said hose) to control dust. You will need breathing, eye, and ear protection....See MoreBasement bath concrete floor and walls -shower moisture barrier?
Comments (7)Concrete will just wick moisture everywhere that it’s attached to. The framing and any vanity that touches the floor will rot out pretty quickly. An epoxy kludge isn’t a substitute for proper construction practices that include proper waterproofing for wet spaces. If you want the look of a concrete shower, then you can go the traditional construction method and use a micro topping over the cement board walls. You would need to pay attention to proper detailing to the max and have a capillary break installed all the way around where the micro met the existing. Not cheap. There is nothing magic that is cheap and that would provide acceptable conditions for a wet use area....See MoreLarissa Peck
