Floor lamps and kitchen chairs
Comments (2)Floor lamps--I think the proportions are frequently off a little. A lot of floor lamps are tall and skinny with a small shade. They just look "off" to me. I have a floor lamp that came with a small paper shade. When I substituted a much larger (and I mean over twice as tall) lampshade, it looked much better. And people don't always get the right kind of floor lamp. There are reading lamps, which are lower and allow you to direct the light, standard floor lamps to allow general light and torchieres which direct light upward to bounce off the ceiling. Torchieres are great in rooms with a TV, because they don't send glare on to the screen, but they aren't so good as reading or task lamps. I've seen people try to use a swing-arm floor lamp, designed to be a reading lamp, to light up an entire living room. Just not going to happen, because of the size of the lamp and the way the light is directed. And the floor lamp has to be worked into the overall decorating scheme. You can't just plonk one down anywhere and expect it to work. It's got to fit with the proportions of the room, the basic style of the decor and it has to fit where it is needed--a reading lamp by a cozy armchair, a general lamp by the side of a sofa....See MoreHow to know what size lamp to get?
Comments (14)Thanks Magnaverde. I am not published because it doesn't comform to the editorial content of the magazines that are published right now. I think it may be close to what Met Home and Domino published but they no longer exist. Photos of the apartment made it partway through the editorial process for three national design magazines. #1 design editor said "If it was up to me...but the furnishings lean too strongly toward MCM to get the nod from the chief" #2 said "spectacular renovation, but not in the direction of planned editorial content, ...have you considered [#3]" #3 said approximately what #2 said. All of them seemed to think it should get published somewhere, just not by them. #2 and #3 have published things that are similar in spirit, but mostly by people who are well known and published already...the unknowns' work tends to be a bit more polished or something. So basically, either I don't know someone, or they don't know me. My favorite response was from the local design magazine: " ". Once they saw the pictures they said nothing. They tend to publish neo tuscan suburban behemoths or 1990ish Beetlejuice cutesy. They once lavished praise on the homeowner/"collectors" whose "collection" was every piece of white pottery Jonathan Adler had made in the previous two years. It too no more effort than a single shopping trip, but it did require a large credit card bill which the local mag seems to approve of. But I'm not bitter or anything ;-) I am on the market now, and most lookers seem to really like it, but the feedback of one potential buyer was "I don't get it." I like that though, if everybody got it, I don't think that would be a good thing....See Morewhich lamp works better in the master bedroom?
Comments (37)@Kerry - the bedspread - started with a grey checkered one and replaced with a white one with grey border. planning on replacing with another one - still white but a bit more grey throughout (vs just the border). I wasn't sure if you were thinking the white one was too white (when you commented to post with the new bed spread)....See MoreNot feeling either of these lamps
Comments (106)Please remember, this is MY opinion ONLY...LOL...first of all, KEEP the mirror...ANY light in the room will be reflected by it and lighten the room considerably.....next, IF the budget allows, PLEASE replace the 4 TALL wood chairs with ones with LOWER backs !! You are cutting off the "line of sight" with those tall chairs and it makes it look "choppy"...(( relegate the tall chairs to the attic for later use, possibly ))…..next, there ARE "battery operated" wall sconces available, so no wiring would need to be done...they work by remote control...choose ones that are dainty and have hanging crystals the same as in the chandelier to unify the area....ditch the 4 botanical prints and center the sconces to either side of the mirror....next, totally CLEAR OFF the buffet, and put ONE LARGE flower arrangement in the center ( stick with "muted colors" of flowers so it doesn't scream out at you, but is subdued and classy )…..and finally, add a classy table runner with a large crystal candleholder with hurricane shade in center of table with a crystal candlestick to either side of it...REMEMBER..."less is more"...clearing the buffet of everything except a flower arrangement makes it easier to clear off to accommodate serving dishes and looks less cluttered...same with candle pieces on table runner...when dining, YOU can choose to leave them and light them, or clear table off completely....your room has such a classy and subdued vibe ….what time is dinner and when should I arrive??? LOL...good luck with it all.......See Moretypeandrun
