Home renovation - dated fireplace / built ins
Comments (30)Thank you everyone - will definitely close up the niches! Behind the sofa is another odd challenge. The owners moved a staircase to open up the floor which is great - but it creates that odd wall. Our contractor suggested removing that and replacing it with a bannister like the one in the adjacent room. As you can see, the stairs going to the lower level now look like you're going into a dungeon. Taking out the wall to the floor level and opening it up with a bannister I thought was a great idea to make it look less like a tunnel and open up the space even more. Also want to replace the ugly hand rail. Not fond of the cut out - thought I could wrap the columns with trim to make them look like they should be there. By now you're probably wondering why we bought this home - but it sits on a golf course with a fabulous view and in a lovely community. Love your input - any suggestions for this are very welcome!!...See MoreFun and modern built-ins
Comments (23)I have seen a few window benches where instead of storage beneath, they pull out into bed for sleepovers. Very cool for kids, but hidden function that you'd never guess. Depends how much width you have For built ins, personally I try to avoid large aftermarket bookshelves... Have to awkwardly strap them to the wall so they don't tip over. Why not do a more plain/traditional bookshelf over a cabinet, and then have the funkiness be a bold color or the items themselves stored on it? Sometimes less is more (without seeing the room and more of your home)...See MoreWhat to put in place of old built-ins that flanked fireplace?
Comments (3)I would have bottom cabinets built into both sides. It looks like perfect placement for a TV, so skip the shelving and mount your TV on one side of the fireplace and put artwork on the other side. Or the TV on one side and the wood shelves on the other side. Remove the mantle completely and leave the fireplace as is. You can paint the cabinets the same Greige as your cabinets, or the same white as your trim, depending on your furnishings. It might look nice to make them white and put your deep green color from the island on the backs of the shelving area....See MoreBuilt-ins Around Fireplace?

You may need the wood from the part you cut off the right side to help you pry the left side loose from the walls after it is severed from the mantel over the uprights. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48qQ5ToP95M Cut the edges as straight as you can; however, don't sweat the small stuff -- you can smooth the surfaces and round the corners after once the excess mantel has been removed....See MoreRelated Professionals
