I hate to be a misery but Camellia does not grow back easily once it is damaged. I wouldn't advise pruning it either - same reason. Why don't you buy a second plant for the bare side? You could get two contrasting colors.

Very good advice. I don't know what the restrictions are, but you can certainly use collected shower water to hand-water your plants with on an individual basis. I can't imagine what you must have paid for a 6 foot camellia (a BUNCH), so going the extra mile is important. Larger plants take much longer to establish into the surrounding soil, so I expect that the major part of the root system is still contained within the original root mass, especially since you've been under water restriction. Is it that you are not allowed to run wasteful irrigation systems or what are the stipulations of your restriction?

Hi KY girl, Are you still looking for a cold hardy gardenia, I know its been several months since you posted this, but in case you haven't found one, I just purchased two from Lowe's. Its "Miami Supreme" variety and the tag says although not to 0 degrees but hardy (20 to 10 degrees). If you go to this website: Lowes.com/plants Click on plant search and type in L7109, under the plant tag code number and it will give you some of the plants specifications, I know it's not zero degrees but might work out for you if you cover them really well when it gets below 20.Or pot them up and bring them in when its below that. But then I live in Florida and lucky for us it never gets that cold. These are my very first gardenias, so I am really new and have been reading all I can on how to take care of them properly. If they are in flower now, they are probably Sasanqua camellias. They are autumn flowering, some have quite small leaves, take more sun than Camellia Japonica (which is probably the ones you are more used to) and are very popular for hedging. They are not as "formal" as the Japonica. You might like to take a flowering stem for a Sunday drive and get a positive identification. While you are waiting for spring to come (and fertiliser time) you might like to make sure the soil is moist and apply a nice layer of mulch.
