is marble installation the same as porcelain

My contractor is installing my Bianca perle marble flooring and shower , using the subway size . It’s uneven and raised up higher in some places and lots of corners chipped. Is this normal in installing marble?

Nope. Seemingly he does not have the skill set required, but please post up some pics of the work and what he is working with. Are the walls level and plumb? Is the pan properly pitched?

I just tiled my bathroom in Porcelanosa Marmol Blanco Carrera. It is a white background with gray lines, ink jet technology so all tiles are different even though you do see the same design sometimes but moved over a bit on the tile, just like real slabs do when they are slices out of the same block. It is also rectified so the edges are squared off. They are 35 1/2" wide by 12 1/2" tall. They also have a floor tile to go with it that is square about 16 or 18". They are beautiful.

Are carrera / carrara marble and venatino marble the same?

Mine is venatino. I was told they come from the same quarry but are classified by appearance. The background of the venatino is whiter where the background of carrera is more grey. My slab has a mix of spots and finer dark veins with some more subtle broader ones. They reminded me of ink squiggles and blots on old parchment. I thought of da Vinci and I was sold. And in the end, that's really what matters -- finding a look that is special to you. No one else may see my marble the way it hit me.

We laid out the varied tile patterns and tried to make sure the ones that were the same were not placed beside each other. I still love my bathroom "marble" tile. Good luck with your project!

I love my honed porcelain bathroom floor tile that looks like marble. It’s subtle and doesn’t etch or stain. When I look at it closely, I don’t see dots. Actually I never found a quartz countertop for my kitchen that looked as authentic as my porcelain tile. I also have marble tile for the fireplace, and it is not as clean a look as the porcelain tile I have. Do count the patterns though. Especially if the patterns are memorable. Mine is pretty generic and nearly white, very low contrast.

The basic install skill the same yet polishing and edging can require more of a fabricators skillset which most Qualified tilers will posess.

The cost of marble and its fragility creates a few concerns.

More liability to the installer on cost alone.

More particular in mortar, grout and cleaners/sealer choices.

More likelihood of chips and scrathces pre, during and post install

More likelihood of future cracks and failures due to more stringent substrate demands, and long term care issues.

More expense in prep materials and timeframes.

Likelihood of a homeowner using the wrong cleaners.

Just transporting it or trusting the homeowner to handle it select inspect and purchase it is a risk in management as such we insist on procuring marble as A 100% dealbreaker.....

I could go on. there's more but in actuality its easier to cut and tool.

I charge more for all these reasons.

Agree w the above comment it requires a qualified installer.
