Design Dilemma Kitchens Remodeling

Need suggestions for extra counter tops

We are looking to demolish an existing kitchen island and add extra counter top space. Any suggestions on where the extra counter space can be built? We have an open space near to the kitchen but there is a door that opens up to the outside. Attaching the photos herewith. Thanks in advance.

I need a to scale floor plan showing all windows any doorways and where thye lead all the appliance placement and sizes . From what I see in the pics that island is not ideal. I like 48" wa;kways and in front of the fridge for sure at least that . I need that floor plan please . I see very dated cabinets are you planning on redoing this space or just adding a counter ?

You don't have any wiggle room to encroach further on aisles. The most obvious place for expansion is to switch from wall ovens to a slide in range, but there would be a whole cascade effect to adapt cabinets and counters. I don't think is worth investing in with the cabinets you have.

There might be a slight bit of improved function if you remove the wall ovens, switch, to a range, and place the fridge there to the right of the dishwasher, but you'll never be able to get a larger island because of the location of the corner of the living room.

ugh.... we are just at this point now and realized that our new counter/breakfast bar is 12' with the sink cutout dead center. My wife is stuck on an undermount and we really wanted granite... we will, of course, be getting a few fabricators to bid it. But is it feasible to do the seam with a cutout at the seam? The front edge of the sink seems a bit vulnerable to me. Also the current layout has the dishwasher adjacent to the sink and I guess we'd need to get the cabinet built with a support at the seam. If we can seam at the sink it would be small, just the length of the front setback (breakfast bar transitions to countertop there)... how well does the bullnose normally line up on a seam? Do they polish it on-site? Are we better off getting used to NOT granite? The 12' counter is not negotiable in our design.

I don't think there is, and even if there was, it wouldn't really help you. Everything looks different depending on the size of your kitchen, the windows, the ceiling height, the floor, the light. It's not just about the color of the cabinets. What you need to do is go to a good stoneyard with a large selection. You may have to make an appointment in advance with the stoneyard, give them a call first. Bring either a sample of your cabinet, or don't be afraid to bring a cabinet door. Most people do if they are trying to match existing cabinets. You might also bring a sample of your floor if you have it. Find 2 or 3 stones you like at the stoneyard. Take photos of the slabs with the cabinet door leaning against them to refer to later. Get samples of those stones from the stoneyard. Take the samples home. You may find they look very different in your home setting. But you will be able to choose once you see the stones you like in your home. That is the only way to find stone counters that go with your existing cabinets.

for the handles, may I suggest something to pick up on the hues in the flooring? A little more copper toned. you have light cabs, light floors. I think throwing in a dark ORB w/o actual copper highlights would be too much of a contrast. IMO. cypress park Sandra, I like the porcelain one better than the other one. Does the backsplash have to be done immediately? If the tones in the porcelain tile you picked clash w/the ivory tones in the counter, it could be a problem. However, I did find some copper toned ones that should be avail. these are porcelain/SS, and treated so as not to stain or tarnish. I LOVE these for your kitchen. timeless and gorgeous. They are probably not super cheap, but it would be worth it for me. http://www.miusartmosaics.com/arabesque-lantern-beacon-copper-tile-in these would also work. the site is here: maybe they have them in stock.http://www.westsidetile.com/arabesque-tiles/ i like this one too. notice the copper faucet. beautiful w/the glass mosaic. if you got the cream countertop, this would look amazing w/your floors. this last one is a copper colored slate/quartzite.

Rather than Absolute Black, I would recommend Virginia Mist or Steel Gray. Look at your local stone yards to see what other granites are the lowest cost with least maintenance (some granites require sealing periodically - the two I mention do not. I have Verde Lavras granite which also does not) Quartzite (a natural stone) is quite expensive. I'm not familiar with Limestone as a counter material. Engineered quartz composite from IKEA is reasonably priced, durable but not as durable as stone. Solid Surface (eg Corian ) is also a good choice; user friendly and can be repaired if damaged.

Google search for pull out counter extension, or flip up counter extension. In the right spot, it might give you what you need. Or stash a rolling cart in a nearby room.

I think you need to be really clear where you need extra counter space, and what it will be used for, because wherever you put it, it will block a traffic path.

Maybe an over-sink cutting board? There are even ones meant to go over the stove

Thank you for all the suggestions. In the end we decided to demolish the wall which contains the fridge and making it more open.
