I do have a black plastic crate in the deepest part of the pond that has a pot of waterlilies on top of it. It's a decorative crate that I bought at walmart with all different size holes in it. I'm not sure if the biggest of the fish could have fit in it but I know that all of the mid-size and smaller fish could have. I can cut a larger hole in each side of the crate and run some of the black tubing through it. I even have some of the tubing just laying around. The ponds already 2 1/2 feet deep so I'm not sure how much another 1/2 foot would help but at this point I don't have the time or resources to make the pond deeper. I wish I had a way to rig up the mono filament line like you've described but with the way the garden is set I don't think that will be possible. Here's another picture of the garden from last year. The pond is right in front of the porch and that part of the garden forms a triangle that narrows down to a point where I was standing when I took the picture (The garden looked really good this year so I have no idea why I have no more recent pics to share!). I've done some research on the netting and can get enough for my pond for about $25 so I'll probably be ordering some in the next few days unless I come across something I like better. Once the netting is in place I can start looking for new fish! Since I'm starting all over I'm going to be a bit pickier as to what fish I get. More shubunkins and fancy goldfish instead of so many common goldfish. One thing I have decided though is when my family asks me what I want for christmas a heron decoy for the garden will be at the top of the list! Not only would it look neat it should also help deter other big wading birds from coming for a visit. Kara

Here's the dealio on the "dissappearing slab" issue - CA$H IF YOU paid someone to secure THE SLABS that you originally fell in love with and those slabs got "lost" after you wrote the check - then something ELSE is stinking like a red herring in Denmark........ Terilee: IF you paid your contractor a deposit to "secure" the slabs - and then the slabs were "lost" - your contractor is at fault and should do things to "fix" the issue - like pulling your slabs out of his ARSE to make you happy.... The problem here is that contractors get paid the deposit, then they don't apply those same funds to securing the slabs in question - they use your deposit money for something else. So then.......... the slabs that YOU fell in love with are still "available" (even though YOU put down a deposit to "lock the up for you") anyone else can aquire YOUR chosen slabs........ Your contractor usually has five days - from the time YOU sign on the dotted line - (affriming that yes in deed - THESE are the SLABS FOR ME) until he has to EITHER issue a Purchase Order to the distributor to have YOUR slabs shipped to his shop, or pay COD to hold the slabs or have them delivered to his shop - in accordance with the time line on your project. IF NO MONEY IS PAID to the distributor - he's NOT going to hold any slabs for anyone - no matter how much in love you are with your Delicatus.... THAT's the way this business works. They will NOT hold a slab with out some money being thrown into the mix. No tikki - no washi!!!! This could have been the case here..... maybe - maybe not -the fact of the matter is now - you have to FIND your slabs all over again, and this time - MAKE SURE that the slabs you pick are the the slabs you get. I'd stay away from using the grease pencil all over tha face of the slab as some stones will absorb the grease pencil and it'll be hard to remove all of that residue - kind of defeats the purpose - you'll get your slab, but it'll take an hour or so to get all of the grease pencil off the face - I would write it all on the BACK of the slab instead - as it's a really good idea, just not (IMHO) on the polished face of the stone..... does that make sense? marcia, I am so sorry to hear this! I didn't have a lot of luck with the Morden roses (Morden Blush and Morden Sunrise) before, but the John Davis that I planted last year had NO die back whatsoever and is growing very well already! The Hope for Humanity rose had some die back but is doing fairly well. However, the Morden Belle is something that I am thinking of getting rid of.... over the last 3 years, it had significant die back every year, and also the new branches tend to flop a lot. The roses were not spectacular either. So, in the end, it just survived but not thrived. Since these are all in my yard, I think that it's more to do with the species than me... LOL! Wayne, I am curious to hear about your Double Knockout, as I had a hedge of it in my zone 5 garden before, and it grew as tall as 5 feet and it was an unstoppable blooming machine! Do they really survive in zone 3 then? Marcia, I think that your theory that it was the cold weather after the warm temperature had a lot to do with it. Isn't it such a pain to garden in our FAR NORTH location!? Sigh.....
