Updating a 1985 fireplace

inspected and we will need major repair to be able to continue to burn wood. We decided now would be the time to have a gas insert installed. We won’t need the vents anymore (they are ugly) so we thought we should update the look and have new brick put on and cover them up. We found out that having new brick put on is very expensive. Should we try painting or whitewashing the brick to see how that would look and if we didn’t like it we could have new brick put on.
