Living room redesign suggestions

Hi Houzz gang!!
I am looking for your expert suggestions. I want to change the look of my living room. I want to get new furniture. I don't like the way it looks right now, as it's too brown and outdated. I have no idea where to begin. What furniture and decor items do you recommend? I want it to go for a homey, yet minimalistic look.

Go look at some examples of minimalist or cozy/homey living rooms here on Houzz, ArchDigest etc. When you find an image you like, find a few more that look like it, then take a few designs from each one and incorporate it into your living room. Before you start that, decide what colors you want or want to stay away from. Is the room big? Will it need a TV or just be a family gathering area? What functional items do you need, etc. You said you like minimalist but cozy. Minimalist can come off cold sometimes so a warmer version might be scandinavian (hygge) style. Perhaps try googling "Scandinavian Minimalist Living room" and see what you like. I would start with deciding a wall color and then choosing Sofas, rugs and side tables.

Get a rug and new chair

Put some art up on the walls

I wasn't able to switch your sofa and love seat but here are a couple of rules. Rug should be large enough to hold all front feet of the seating. Art should cover 2/3 - 3/4 the width of the sofa and hang 5 - 8" above. Please replace the vertical blinds on the window. Hang curtains on that wall and no art. There is not enough space for art on the window wall. Remove about half your pillows. At least remove the ones that prevent you from sitting on the sofas.

It will be best if you post a floor plan with dimensions of both areas in order to get layout correct...then select rugs / soft furnishing colors before you finalize paint.

Eye-popping! I would adjust the rug so the leggy chairs sit entirely on it and pull the the sofa no further than 18" from the table so people have a place to put down drinks, eyeglasses, etc. I don't really think the table is large enough for the sofa, and the one you already had is not the right style for the room now. Can you frame the art and put a console table under it? I think you should pull more of the blue from the art and rug up to seating level. Maybe the lamp base could be blue. The two brown ceramic pieces between the chairs aren't working, IMO.

Pinterest has some great inspirations where you can figure out your taste and then decorate along the lines. I'd would go with a lighter color theme and less furniture. Make the fire place the focal point. Can the TV go over the fire place. Also, the TV and wall decor is hung too high. You don't have to go all Crate & Barrel neutral but it would make the room appear bigger. Add colorful pillow, a throw. Art work should be unique and not mass produced. Larger scale (or 2) black and white photo art or a cool thrift finds. If you are using natural wood table etc, make sure they are not a matched set. But also the living room has to match the rest of the house, the flow. Is lighter upholstery practical because of kids/pets? Something to keep in mind if you make big changes. A bit hard to see but I see wood floors. They really warm up a house and don't need to be covered up that much. Re-consider wall color based on furniture color choice. Warm/cold/lighting situation. It can be a fun project. I'd look on Pinterest, create a virtual mood board and use the inspo here.

Agree you don't need to change everything, the lounge suite still has a good few years left in it! It's what is not there which is not helping the room feel comfortable- no floor rug, no lamps, wall art. The occasional chair looks more suited to a bedroom, so focus on one occasional chair in a different style which is comfortable, reposition one of the decorative pots out of the corner and bring into view. A tall standing lamp for that corner, with a material shade for texture.
