hard to picture...might be better with several minis and the seeded glass shown below allows the light....w a little bit of filtering to soften which might facilitate the bulb idea working okay w a few in a row. I like the first or 2nd one shown [they are minis] w your wagon wheel as far as looks but again you have to spec out the number of fixtures ....the size of each..if the amt of light will work etc. . What do you find great about the wagon wheel selection?

looks like w the ceiling pitch and the long stem maybe the inconspicuous glass shade in a smaller size is more ideal aesthetically....then you can make a row and it doesnt look congested.

As wagon wheel chandelier designs go, your selection IMO is pretty brutal and crude in appearance. I don't know what style the room is but this light is barn style.

You could purchase something twice as nice for half the price.

Finding any wagon wheel light of 32”+ (size i need for proportion) may be easier and most certainly cheaper in the US than it is here. At the prices you quoted (<$200), i would be lucky to find a vanity light. Add my distaste for candelabra bulbs and it gets even trickier. i will look some more. Thanks again.

Sorry, I don't know where you are located but some of the fixtures I posted are from Amazon like your original fixture. I'm not a fan of the candelabra bulbs either with the flame tip but I do like those that look like bullets.

Well. Where is "Here" exactly?? Don't plan a ton of light from Edison bulbs, that much is certain. And options abound for bulbs in any cage type fixture, beyond candelabra

@JAN MOYER, here is Canada. What US consumers see on Amazon.com for $200 US or less is not always available on Amazon.ca. As for ordering from Amazon.com, by the time you factor in import fees, exchange rate, extremely difficult if at all possible cross-border returns, and the risk of a non-compliant made-in-China light that an electrician won’t even install, you may as well stick with the choice and prices of local big box stores. Given my 18‘ x 18‘ sitting area, i need something at least in the 30” range. That limits my choice further. There will also be 6 pot lights. They will do the hard work. The central fixture is to play down the 16’ ceilings. The overall look is modern farmhouse. The setting is coastal with ocean views from all windows.

@Raimondi, maybe you are on to something. I have a total of 12 pots in the overall area that combines kitchen, dining and sitting. The electrician had originally suggested 15, but I thought that the island would absolutely need pendants. Maybe it does not. Maybe 6 pots plus wagon wheel in the living room and 3 runs of 3 pots in the kitchen/dining is a better way to go.

@Raimondi, this is the space as you walk into it. The island will be the first thing you encounter. The area to the right with the 6 windows is the sitting area where i plan to put a wagon wheel light. It will be centered with the middle window and a 15’ shiplap fireplace bump out to the far right that you cannot see here.

The real purpose of a decent pendant over an island is to LIGHT the SURFACE work space.

Best for that? A shaded pendant. not glass, not open cage......that forces the light onto the surface, as in down......

Naked bulbs? Nope. Glass? Nope.

These are meant as a decorative task light. The current rage of lets hang a darn light bulb? Not so much. "Forcing" light down via a shade, results in a warmer feel in the kitchen as well. Virtually a million will marry well to the large ring chandelier in the great room.

@JAN MOYER, thanks. What do you think of the no pendant at all approach? I would have 9 recessed lights (3 runs of 3) and work with electrician to ensure layout provides 2 of those 9 over the island.

I like the idea of an unobstructed view of all the ocean views and of a statement light and large mantle in the living room. Maybe the wagon wheel available at Home Depot is crude as someone pointed out, but if i don’t buy pendants, maybe I can afford to find better.

There are plenty of old threads debating pendants vs no pendants and the results are always 50/50. I've had no pendants installed over the island in my last 2 kitchens. I had enough other stuff going on and I didn't need to add pendants that would have just been visual clutter. Used recessed light over the islands.

Now that you posted a photo of the space, that 32" pendant is going to look small and underwhelming in the space. A typical mistake people make with light fixtures is buying ones that are too small.

I'd pick pendants with a black finish. Open bulbs are not great for task lighting over an island because they tend to throw shadows. Something like these, perhaps:

@chispa, the defined space where the light is planned measures 18 x 18 (18x15 if you exclude the few feet of traffic space behind the sofa), so anything up to mid-30 will work (18+15=33 ideal diameter). Anything bigger would actually hang over part of the sofa that is facing the windows. When we did a mockup, anything over 32-35 looked out of proportion and like a death trap for anyone seated below.

@Sabrina Alfin Interiors, I had the black light below on my list at one point but feared it was too small with its 10” diameter (see mockup of how it compares to island). Should I go back and reconsider? The price was great and the rustic look fits nicely with other elements we have (live edge shelving, recycled wood mantle against white shiplap, black door hardware…).

I'd choose a black fixture without the Edison bulbs. Again, they throw shadows which isn't great over a work space like an island.

As far as those sizing formulas, they are just a guideline, or starting point, and not set in stone. It makes a big difference visually if you have a 32" one dimensional wagon wheel, compared to a 32" fully opaque sphere/ball. The formulas don't take that into consideration.

Just saying, because even though I have bought many light fixtures over the years, I got it wrong in the foyer of the house we just built! I'm shopping for a much bigger fixture right now.
