Seed starting medium--compost?

I was watching a youtube video on how to start foxgloves from seed and was quite surprised when he filled the tray with compost. The reason I was so surprised is that I was taught to start seeds in sterile medium to prevent damp-off, but here's this guy--he got great results. So--have things changed in the last half-century (yikes-it's been that long!)? Because you KNOW I'd be delighted to just use compost from the bin than spending money on sterile starting mix. What has your experience been? Undoubtedly, I have questioned the sterile mix, since seeds started outdoors in the ground do okay.
