Anyone else do this?
Comments (9)I usually do not even come to the making of the list, especially since we have two enemies of the paper sheets in the house - our toddler and our cat, both are very happy to shred it to pieces. :) I usually have a plan in my head when I come outside, but then end up "quickly doing that other thing before the major thing". :))) I also have a couple of plans where certain plants had to be planted... outdated even before the planting have started. :)))...See MoreDid anyone else buy Peach Blossom from BB?
Comments (4)Well, Now that you ask that question and I think about it, I haven't had much success getting several of the smaller flowers to grow many healthy green leaves let along bloom again! Now, don't go by me since I don't have all that many smaller flowered bulbs, just Emerald, Graffiti, Joker, Lemon Sorbet, Trentino, (which never bloomed) and Green Dragon to name a few off the top of my head. But, on the other hand, I have two Mistys that plumped up considerably this summer,as well as Lilystar, Amoretta and Neon Rose and the few cybisters that I had, (I bought a few more this season) other than Emerald, also plumped up considerably..so I guess it's too early to predict doom and gloom for these small flowered bulbs. It will be interesting to hear what others have to say on this matter..You may come away from this discussion with several smaller flowered bulbs that are good doers for most of us. I don't know whether Jewel is considered a small flowered varieties, but my bulb just about doubled in size. Donna...See MoreAnyone else buy the cartons of just egg whites?
Comments (7)The last time I priced it out, the cartons contained about 16 egg whites and worked out to be cheaper than buying a dozen eggs and tossing the yolks. It wasn't always that way though - egg prices here have really gone up. I assume it is due to the high price of grain in Canada. I don't buy eggs anymore (I share own chickens), but occasionally I will still buy the carton of liquid whites if I need a large quantity and don't want to waste my precious, orange yolks! Or if I want a pasturized egg product for whatever reason. Dances....See MoreAnyone else have bad luck buying perennial plants from Burpee?
Comments (43)A bit more on the supposed evils of Burpee, lambasted as "cultural vandals" for deceiving poor Dan Hinkley and running Heronswood into the ground. It turns out that after a few years, Burpee concluded the "experiment" wasn't working and offered to sell the place back to Hinkley and Robert Jones for less than half what they'd been paid for it ($5.5 million). They refused. Apparently they were no longer interested in running Heronswood, and an opportunity to preserve the jobs of its workers was lost (wonder if any of those employees ever shared in the $5.5 million bonanza). So I find it difficult to sympathize with either of the major parties to this mess. Burpee was hoping to cash in on the cachet Heronswood had with gardeners to boost their plant business. Hinkley and his partner got to cash in, which was their right, but it was never a realistic expectation that a specialty place like that appealing to a limited group of devotees could ever be "taken national" (if that stated goal of Hinkley's ever existed). Too bad it didn't work out (in its last years before the sale to Burpee I'd noticed that Heronswood's offerings for some perennials I coveted had been markedly scaled back, for instance its once-massive selection of asters. Apparently Dan lost interest in maintaining varieties that resulted in only a handful of sales every year, just like Burpee). http://gardenrant.com/2012/07/the-story-ends-well-for-heronswood.html http://www.gardencentermag.com/article/heronswood-nursery-auction/...See Morejemimabean
