Veggie Tales- January 2021
Comments (281)Hi all - I jumped into this thread early in the month and then got caught up in work. Today was a good day to thinking about gardening though, with 3-4" fresh snow on the ground and more coming down throughout the day. I sure am glad I ordered the bulk of my seeds over the Christmas break. I just checked the results of a germination test with some old seeds (2014/2015) and placed a small order with Seed Savers, which is now publishing a 30-day shipping delay. These are seeds I don't have to start until April, so that's fine. I have broccoli seeds from 2014 that are still germinating at a great rate, so that was nice to see. My next big adventure will be going out in the next week or so to purchase some compost. We only started our pile last summer, and it's frozen/covered in snow, so I need some for my seed starting mix. I'm doing a homemade mix and trying soil blocks this year (the Elliot Coleman method). My first seeds (onions/leeks) should be started around February 15, and compost is the only ingredient in the mix I'm still missing. Trying to figure out where to get it (might end up at Home Depot) since February isn't exactly prime compost time in Wisconsin. @Cindy - I'm going to try germinating some Hot Portugal seeds from 2012 this year, so I'll report back on that. :) In the past I think I've only had to use seed that was 2-3 years old....See MoreJanuary 2022 - Veggie Tales
Comments (94)We've been dealing for 3 days with snow, maybe 5 or 6 inches total. And went to -2 recently. When the skies are clear and it's too cold to snow it goes way down, and then we get more snow with a much warmer temperature. Take your pick. I blew the snow off the walks and the car with a snow blower. I ordered seeds today from Baker Creek. Four different lettuce varieties, none of them the Black Seeded Simpson I always grow. So I went to pay with a gift card and noticed there was a very small balance, enough to order one more package of seed. So I added Long Island Cheese Pumpkin as a gift to the person who gave me the card. Suddenly sales tax shows up on the order which wasn't there without Long Island being involved?? To confirm I looked at two orders I made last year, no sales tax?? I plan on growing the 2 eight foot rows of Black seeded Simpson and 4 half rows of the new lettuce looking for tasty lettuce that perhaps doesn't bolt till later than the BSS. I wouldn't order the seed but my heart problem seems to be disappearing. I'm getting no where near the shortness of breath and have much more energy....See MoreDecember 2022 Veggie Tales
Comments (63)It's -1 °F here at noon. Wind chill of -25 according to 2. We got snow but there's so much drifting that it's all blowing to the east. What it looks like is a light dusting with grass showing thru. But we're on top of the hill. Channel 2's videos show them plowing at the mall?? It's so windy that I'm wondering if the drifting snow ever comes in before the snow falling from the clouds. Wondering what the uncovered lettuce will look like after Mondays warming trend begins. I see green poking out of the ice and snow from the window....See MoreVeggie Tales >>> July 2023
Comments (39)John, I may need to re-think my ele wiring levels. The posts that come with the ele fence set-up are about 4' tall and have 4 clips to string up the wiring. The lowest clip is about 6" from the bottom and has about 12" between each clip so there are large gaps between each wire. Deer can easily hop over 4' so it's not much of a deterrent to them unless they touch a wire with their nose. Since the lowest wire is 6" above the ground then small critters can easily slip under that wire. The ele shock is activated about once every other second with a brief gap in-between each ele surge so a carefully timed critter can slip through without being shocked. I like that 1.5" separation idea so maybe I can rig the lowest 2 wires at 1.5" and 3" heights above the ground. The main problem would be weeds interfering at that low level and also wire sag allowing the wire to touch the ground. Your thoughts on installing the wire just prior to crop production would keep critters from becoming too used to its presence, but many critters like rabbits & groundhogs would be happy to just munch on the early plant foliage....See Morevgkg Z-7 Va
