Starting a Chri cactus from a leaf

I found an entire leaf of a pretty pink-flowered Chri cactus on the floor of my local Home Depot. I put it into a pot with soil and have been keeping it moist. But it doesn't look like it's rooting. How can I do this better?

Should be a small pot. Keep in a bright location. As for moisture, keep barely damp. It will be slow. When did you start with it?

I started it a couple weeks ago, Socks. Put it in a small pot of damp soil and kept it damp. Started to wither and I thought, "Oh no, here's another failed propagation." Well, when I went to toss the withered leaf, I saw that it had meanwhile formed several very alive-looking roots! I moved it and a couple of other succulent bits I found on the floor of big box stores into a zip lock sandwich bag with a piece of crumpled damp paper towel. The withered CC has plumped out again. Hope to see this little narrow-leafed succulent in there root out as well. Yesterday I added 3/4 of a Hoya carnosa leaf I found on the floor of a big box store. I always wanted one, and the price was right!

Toni: You are just too funny. You of all people know my plants sometimes better than I.lol. You got it right with Cycad:-) Jeff: Thank you. I can tell you that Tom and I saw some real beauties. A picture of us would of been a great idea. My Friend says that the color of those jades above, in particular the very bright variegates will retain that color all year without supplemental lighting. In fact, those ones above received less than 6 hours of direct sunlight all summer to be followed by shade of trees. That is what makes these difficult to find and different than any other I have ever had. In fact, I have never seen until he showed me. He received the mother plant labeled as "Sunrise", and has never seen them sold anywhere. I tell him he is lucky to have friends on the other side of the world and I lucky to have access to a few of his extras. His friend keeps his on the Northwest side of his home and they keep the brilliant color all year long. I shall see for myself this winter since a couple will be kept in an East facing window and the rest under just lights in the basement. I will keep you updated as winter passes by. Mike :-)

Rick - I have been successful and unsuccessful with seed by soaking them in wet paper towel for at least 8 to 12 hours before planting in cactus mix under a grow light. Then I use Spray N Grow misted into the container as many as 3 times a day before and after germination (3 to 21 days, depending on the variety). As far as setting them outside, I wait until I have a seedling about 4+ inches tall then only a little sun later in the day so as not to scorch tender vegetation. I use a plastic cover from the local grocery store - the kind they use to cover cakes and such - works beautifully as a small greenhouse. Since most experts say not to over water plumies - I have read quite a lot about foliar feeding and this season it has worked out great. I got an 80% germination rate this year. So, it sounds like you and I have very similar approaches to the germinating technique. Hope this helps you some. Chris Arkansas

Beth I think you’re asking how long to keep the fruit on the plants for? It does take longer then one would think. I wish I could give you an exact amount of time, but I can’t. Some cactus fruit like my big Opuntia will take close to a year to ripen, but generally the smaller the fruit the less time it takes, but the small ones still take months. I can definitely say yours are not ready yet. If I had to guess they should be ready by mid spring (May). This is a total guess;). I usually wait till they look dehydrated and sometimes they’ll have a split. Here’s some pics from Desert Plants of Avalon The fruit below I wouldn’t remove yet. But this one looks ripe for the picking. Lastly keep the fruit away from rodents and birds because they will eat them. I know from experience and it’s such a bummer;).

Mine is blooming now also,kinda late this year. I havn't been able to get into PB in a few weeks now,i emailed them again the other day,and they said i'm one of the ones that the problem hasn't been worked out yet!! Hope they plan to extend my coverage since it's already paid for. Happy New Year to you all,first i've been over here this year.

No water initially or it will rot. Honestly you can leave it sitting on a shelf until you see a few roots come out, then plant in barely most soil.

I see about three 1/4" roots coming from the bottom of the CC. None yet from the narrow-leafed unknown succulent. One day is a bit soon to expect roots from the hoya. I open the ziplock bag and let a little air exchange to occur before blowing more air into it and sealing it again. How many roots and how large should they be before I can plant the CC?

Once the end is callused, better yet with roots starting, you can place the rooted end shallowly into suitable media for succulents. Just enough moisture so it is not completely dry.

The roots will continue to elongate down into the media. Water as needed.
