Dogs are so different from one another, each has their own personality and preferences, just like people. Duchess my chihuahua is wonderful. She is a working dog, helping me with my poor hearing- she will bark a few times if stuff is delivered outside my door, or even if someone walks past my door, but she only barks a few times and is not a yapper.

She is a lap dog and loves to watch TV. In the past prior to Clementine I had tried to do some training from time to time but she would look at me like 'Yeah, right" when I asked her to sit.

But dogs I am convinced, learn from each other. Clementine, the new Lab pup, is SO smart especially if treats are involved. She learned to sit in a very small amount of time (and is learning other things). Duchess had refused to sit for a treat most of the time, but as soon as she saw Clementine eating her treats suddenly she too would sit when asked.

Clementine too has learned to let loose with a few woofs when someone comes to the door, and is now taking her place on the sofa to watch TV just like Duchess.

As Aristotle said, the whole dog family is greater than the sum of its parts.

Dogs not only 'teach' each other, but they 'teach' us humans also. Why sometimes they even 'train' us, lol.

Lucille, I have only ever had more than one dog at a time once in my life. This is Sparrow and Gus (collectively known as Asparagus) At least that is what it sounded like when I was calling them. Sparrow! Gus!

Gus was a Lhasa Apso and Sparrow was a Black and Tan Coonhound.

I would feed them together and Sparrow would gobble his food down but Gus took his time and I think it was a way to taunt Sparrow as they weren’t allowed to eat the other guy’s food. Gus would sit, looking very smug, with his bowl of food.

Sparrow learned, that after he was done, to go and bark excitedly at the front door as if he had spotted deer or moose or something outside. Gus would go running to see what the commotion was about, I’d let them both out. While Gus was busy looking for the trespasser, Sparrow would circle around to the back door and ask to be let in.

He would then head straight for Gus’ unattended food bowl. Mission accomplished.

They both died about 5 years ago.

My 'got to pee" pooch is a product of two blue merles mating. He has anatomical issues along his throat . His exam showed that the orbits would not support the surgery. His third membrane advances and recedes on both eyes but the left is more severe. The vet said that a surgical repair can be done but will fail shortly after due to the eye shape itself. I was told the membrane will just advance again. He enjoys running around the fenced in yard and also in the fields. We just installed an inground pool this summer. He loved the pool. Since his vision is compromised the pool gave him a security cause he could only go the perimeter of the pool. I purposely installed a swim out ledge for the dogs. He was a calmer dog once he got a chance to swim. When we covered it for the winter, I showed him the change and he has not stepped out on the pool . He is a sweetheart but this peeing has got to stop. He has learned hand signals for sit, come, No, bathroom and just starting to get stay. I had used the come signal and placed him immediately in his kennel that he thought oh I got to go into my kennel . Confused him when the kennel was not around. I let the other dogs out to pee before him which helps stop the marking. When we are out playing he needs to mark on the female when she relieves herself. No doubt they are keeping me in shape but the winter has arrived and i can no longer hose the dogs down. How do I teach him not to mark on my clothes and the female dog. I guess tether him on a shorter lead. I can not give praise vocally and touch can be misconstrued. SInce he is truly deaf his other senses are more keen. He finds the moles in one second and he alerts me to thunder a good thirty minutes before the storm arrives. I hate the smell of pee. I am no mother theresa. I just knew I had the patience and the pack to give him a good life.

What is happening around here is they are using empty houses to hide what they steal. A friend had 2 4-wheelers stolen. A couple weeks later a lady called to report some people at a vacate house down the road from her.. She could hear 4-wheelers. The cops came and they were gone but the 4-wheelers were there. They got a good discription of the guys plus a vehicle. We have a house that is in foreclosuer next to us. I am constantly running people out. People will do anything these days. I think it will get worse before it ever gets better. Susie

Yea it is confusing with the rendering. Sorry about that! The rendering is simply for house design reference. I notated what material is on what part of the house for help in what color should be put where. I’ve read that you’re supposed to use the same color on the same materials. Not sure if that rule is one to follow or not.

I definitely agree with this. I have a Shih Tzu poodle cross (Frank) that I taught to ring a desk bell to be let out.

My daughter’s German Shepherd (Milla ) has learned from Frank to ring the bell when she is here visiting.

And yes they’ve trained us to jump up and let them out when the bell rings!

Multi PET relationships can be so much fun. At one time, I had a smallish mixed breed dog and a pretty cockatiel. They really liked each other, somehow, and had a way of communicating. Homer would flit straight over to Georgia when I opened the cage and tap dance all up and down her whole body. Georgia would get her eye brows and whiskers preened carefully.

But they were also partners in crime. I came home one day to find a whole bag’s worth of potatoes in the seat of the chair next to Homer’s chair. The empty mesh bag was still in the kitchen. The potatoes were not chewed at all. I never figured out the motive but often womdered about it. Homer was always tossing bits of fruits and vegetables through the rungs, then whistling loudly for Georgia to come and gobble them up.

Homer became sick with grief when Georgia died, it took her months to recover and I’m sure that it shortened her own life. Yes, Homer was a female, not discovered until she laid her first egg.
