Awkward space. Need help!

Please help with this awkward space. I need a solution for the area between the fireplace and the utility closet. The width of the space is 38 inches. Preferably storage solution (where decorative accessories can be displayed). Floating shelves? Ladder shelf? Glass door cabinet? Tall slim bookshelf or short bookshelf with artwork above? Help. Television absolutely must go above fireplace because there are many windows in this great room. That's the only space that'll make sense (spec home).

That’s not an awkward space. IMO it’s just fine - adding shelves there would make it awkward. Especially shoved up against a fireplace AND a tv.

Agree^^^^ I would get the TV up and the furniture placed before worrying about that space. Also anything placed there will need to be balanced on the left side of FP

Remove that carpet from the ledge that is just silly. I would look for an amazing contemporary wallpaper for above the trim and a coordinating color of paint for the bottom. When you have the money change those spindles to something much simpler if you like contemporary.I love a touch of metallic. Remove the carpet from the stairs and paint the spindles white, A nice sized round table with gold legs and glass top with a fab lamp with a gold lined shade in either white or black depending on the wall paper and a vase for fresh flowers when you entertain or just for everyday.

remind us where you are ... with that little direct sun.. whatever you put there.. will grow slowly ... and i think.. but cant tell from the pic.. its even darker down below .. perhaps even less direct light ???? .. in regard to the walls that create the triangle .... so then the question would come to.. how big are you thinking of planting??? ... and all the attendant issues about large transplants ... the fact that the old one is leaning toward more light.. and you are tucking this one further back into the cubby hole.. suggests a slo motion future ... which is an issue. for your consideration ... not much dies due to reduced light.. they just dont perform to expectation .. and may have a longer establishment period ... annual growth might be reduced .... since you are removing the old one.. regardless.. you might want to get such done.. and see how it impacts light levels.. considering the declination of the sun this time of year ... seeing that door and brick work.. i would love to see the whole house.. but i cant come up with a reason to say its requisite for this question .. lol ... ken

@ShadyWillowFarm Thanks so much yes those blue chairs have coasters on them but recently moved to the living room because they are too light and my dog likes to barrel into them a litte too much😆 @Jennifer Schuessler thinking of adding a bookcase light—my husband just needs to wire it something similar to this @arcy_gw thanks for all the great suggestions! i am thinking about repainting the fireplace and bookcase in a warmer white. When I did it, it was on a whim while my husband was away for a few weeks . I hsve thought about stacking logs inside—thanks for the reminder. The space is definitely a pass through but I wanted to at least use the space for something @daisychain Zn3b ooh I love the idea of some woven art. I placed the mirror there because there was already a dowel sticking out. But I can try Bigger! and Lower!

Put your furniture in and then post a pic.

Paint the bricks the same color as the mantel. Add art over. Paint the paneled door black.

Don't worry if you don't know where exactly you will place your furniture. Once you put it all in the picture you will get lots of opinions! :-) Then you will get people telling you that you should have provided measurements of the room and every piece of furniture. And they will ask for more pictures from the different corners of the room, even the ones that don't show the space you are asking about. I see it all the time. I am scared to ever post a question about how to arrange my furniture.

Regarding that particular space, you can go with floor, wall-hung or a combination. So I will ask you to get out the things you want to store and display, sort them into "display" and "hide", and provide the dimensions of the items in those two groups. A picture of the two groups would help us. I'm guessing the process of sorting the items you want to store here will tell you what kind(s) of storage you need, and the dimensions, and you won't need us anymore.

Oh, and don't paint anything until you get your furniture arranged. Paint is always the last thing.
