Exterior view of window replacement

I am looking for advice on window replacement (exterior appearance). We are eliminating a large 48 x 48 single pane window due to a kitchen renovation and shortening 3 others. This is the rendering from the contractor. The 3 shortened windows will have a panel placed in the lower part to make up for the size difference in the window opening which looks fine. The larger window, however, looks like we are just boarding it up. It is the one that looks like a large panel with a vertical bisection to the right of the 3 with lower panels.
We were told the brick would be difficult to match 16 years post construction which is understandable. We wanted to have a brick design there, but the quote was high, money not worth the investment. I have searched endlessly online and have not found any ideas. We have contemporary taste so wouldn’t want anything ornate in its place.
If anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate it. Worst case scenario, we plant tall hedges!

I honestly have no idea what you are doing. Take pics of the actual house and then circle the windows you are asking about. IMO that arched widow would be the first one to change so I need to see the actual house. I see no 48x48 window because you post no meausurements

It depends on how the window installation will be completed on the exterior. Our crew installs a trim casing to the exterior. Most trim casings or brickmoulds are 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches wide, depending on the style of the house. The trim casing is designed to waterproof and cover the scar of the previous window unit. If a house is going to get a repaint, we install the windows, let the painters do their painting, and then proceed with our final trim casing install. It makes it easier for the painters. They won't have to mask off the new exterior casing trim or caulk the window. We do the caulking while trimming it out. Michael

+1 to Wow's advice on all counts. I have installed the vinyl units that you mentioned and also the higher grade units, and I can say with certainty that the number of complaints received about "draftiness" , and cold air correlate directly with the air infiltration ratings of the windows. The first 3 that you mentioned are around .1cfm or more (the Great lakes is .19), while the Softlites, Okna, etc are down well below that, as low as .01 in their top offerings. Regarding price, that will vary by dealer. It is not at all out of the question that you may be able to get a Sunrise window for less than a Great lakes for instance. You'll have to shop around. I'd say that a reasonable price premium is worth it anyway, but again, it will vary by dealer. On the comments regarding the vinyl color coating warranty that "isn't that great", that seems a bit funny then to recommend a product of which the entire unit is only a 10 yr warranty, no? On fiberglass, it is a good material. The downside for me is that they typically come at a premium price, even though they don't offer much that a good vinyl choice does. The primary benefit is that you can paint the inyterior and exterior. The domestic fiberglass choices don't boast very impressive performance, although there are some Canadian models that are very good.

Klem1 - I didn't expect that response. I thought the purpose of these forums is to get answers to questions that people post--isn't it? I explained in my OP that the contractor was 2 hours late and was rushed and abrupt. It would actually be wrong of me to have him spend his time to answer my follow-up questions when I have no intention of using him. Don't you think that would be wrong for me to do that? And I think it unlikely he'd answer me anyway, given how he behaved when he came to my house. I hope that this response soothes your outrage. Lkbum_gw - the contractor specifically said that this bedroom's windows would not have the issue my other bedroom's windows have because of the brick. He even pointed to the brick and said, "see, this is brick, so I can set the windows back more". I didn't know what he meant. I will look at the windows more closely as you suggested.

A soft white would work just fine there. The transom question is just a preference thing. You will have some trim to likely do on the interior, but you can certainly go with the taller DH there.

This is currently a 48x48 inch picture window. The circled picture is the contractor rendering. He wants to put 2 panels of hardy plank to match the trim. Our hood is going in that space in our kitchen renovation. I tried to upload pics of the house with no luck. Will try again.
The windows face the neighbors. It is the side of the house.

I think that you will be sorry to lose the light from that window. Redesign the kitchen to save the window.

Yes the contractor designed the kitchen. Thankfully we have a lot of other windows in the kitchen so there will still be lots of light. I just don’t know what to fill the exterior aspect of the window in with.

Since it is on a walkway to a door I would hang a full height decorative wall panel to cover the area and to distract the eye from the filled in window. Look at some of the metal decorative screens available.

I totally agree a contractor is not a designer and for sure not a kitchen designer . I need to see the space for the kitchen and you need to stop right now and get a KD.

The contractor did the outside (the photo I posted). A kitchen designer works with him and designed an amazing kitchen for us that I’m thrilled about and don’t want to tweak. I didn’t initially mention all those details because I really was hoping to just get help with something nice looking for the exterior window replacement.
