We just completed a pool remodel, so my opinions based on that experience: 1) Our old pool deck was kool deck - we hated it. Always dirty, need repainting now and again. We went with travertine on the remodel (over top of kook deck) and love it. 2) electric heater, much higher up front cost, lower operating cost, but much much slower heating as compared with gas/propane. We went with propane for our spa and did not elect to heat our pool. Will probably go with solar panels at later date. 3) Many people are wild about salt. I went with salt with the new system using Pentair. Honestly, so far, this is a don't care for me. Keeping chlorine system healthy is so easy. The only advantage of salt I'm looking for is cost. I will say I'm very underwhelmed with the Pentair Easytouch system, although I really like their variable flow pump so far.

We've had our pool for 8 years and used pavers. A big reason for our choice was drainage. They did a great job and we've had no settling issues, there was even a leak that required repairs under part of the decking so that turned out to be a good choice. We did experience some mold in the wetter sections and weeds growing between pavers after a while. We recently hired a highly rated, professional paver company to redo the sand between the pavers which requires a good powerwash cleaning, replacement of the joint sand, machine-tamping it all, and a sealant. Unfortunately after a couple strong rains the sand was partially washed out in some areas. They came back and redid the entire job again only to have the issue repeat itself and now we're discussing next moves.

Question-why are you wanting to seal the concrete pavers? Thompsons water seal works ok-my DH actually has very good results using clear, matte or satin spray paint on pieces that have been painted and left outdoors. My DH is a statuary maker-he makes everything you can think of for outdoor garden decor-I've had some pieces for over 20 years that were painted and sprayed with Krylon. Concrete pavers are very pourous, so they'll soak up a lot of sealer. If you have good drainage underneath them they shouldn't crack, if you're looking to seal them to preserve color-contact the manufacturer to see what the stain is that was used.
