Comments (45)The article kathy-ny linked above was interesting...but I found this tidbit incredible: The luxury home furnishings retailer is also upping its game on the merchandising front by expanding assortments in categories such as leather, raising the page count of the Source Book catalogs that it mails and adding catalogs in new categories such as rugs. What? In this day and age of paperless electronics, if you can't get your point across in 3,300 pages, 17 lbs. of catalogs, do you really think adding more pages is going to be helpful?!?! Even War and Peace is only 1,400 pages. And the size of the stores they're building is unbelievable. 70,000 sq ft? That's over 1 1/2 acres! Comments (23)Littlebug5 here. Thanks for your blunt comments - I knew my imaginary friends, as DH calls this forum, would help us see the forest through the trees. Some more information: We have known Martha for many many years. DH and I and Martha graduated from high school together in a class of about 100. So obviously we know each other fairly well. To further complicate things, the realtor (I'll call him The Donald) was in our class too. Seems kind of incestuous, doesn't it? But this is a very small town. The price is fair. There are 3 other homes for sale on the golf course (asking $129,000, 179,000 and 200,000). A house a block away sold at Xmas for $237,000, but it is about 10 years old while George and Martha's is 40 years old. This ain't New Jersey, obviously. Our nearest WalMart is 25 miles away - we're Small Town U.S.A. The contingency contract we're asking for does NOT prevent George and Martha from continuing to solicit other offers. It gives us a 72-hour-time-frame for the right of first refusal if they get a better offer. About 20 years ago on a whim DH and I listed the home we lived in at the time at what we thought was an optimistic price. Well, it sold almost right away, and we had nowhere to go. We had to rent for 9 months while we looked for another home. I hated, hated hated renting. I don't want to do that again. That's why I'd like to tie this house up. When we sell our house, we are in a position to be a CASH buyer. So we are not asking for a financing contingency. CASH buyers in our small town for a $215,000 home are very very few and far between. And George and Martha have had NO OTHER OFFERS, cash or otherwise. Yes, I've got some hard advice. And I can kind of see their side, but I see mine too. Comments (64)It seems to me wise for folks who are Christians to be careful about becoming too certain about the circumstances surrounding Christ's return. Let's not forget that the original people who believed in one God and were expecting His Being to come to earth saw the coming, but it was so different from what they were expecting that they said that this wasn't the right one ... ... and they're still expecting a Messiah. Sometimes I feel that the expectations which many Christians have for the Second Coming seem somewhat similar to what the Jews were expecting the first time. Further ... the Romans were a tough lot - you had to be, if you were going to subjugate a major portion of the world ... and keep it subjugated. But their representative in Jerusalem did not see Jesus as threat enough to merit death. Herod, who was a local exercising power under the Romans, and a bit of a skunk, wasn't in favour of killing Him, either. Who was it who insisted that He had to go? That there wasn't room enough in the world for their system and His ... and they knew whose had to be gotten rid of! It was the religious bunch. If Christ were to come in a quiet fashion, as He did before and walked our streets and talked with us ... ... perhaps His ideas and teaching would be so different from what we're used to and accept ... that we would reject Him, as the religious bunch did before. Or perhaps walk by and ignore Him, considering His message ineffectual and of little value in the real world. Comments (45)perennialfan275 , I am not an expert on RRD but I do think it is possible some mites carrying the virus would remain in your garden after removing a plant. Some miticides kill rrd mites. I don't like using them but I have read that it can help to spray miticide every month. I don't do that. Dormant oil spray sprayed in winter might do some good. Maybe Ann in TN will comment, or you can see her e book. I had a neighbor with an infected rose. I gave him printed out info on RRD including pictures. He was nice as can be and said the plant is mine to do what I want with. So I sprayed it with Round Up brush killer, miticide, and hairspray. The hairspray was something I'd heard mentioned as one way to possibly immobilize mites. Then we cut down the plant, bagged it up, and dug out the roots. Then we had to follow up with digging out some more roots. I offered my neighbor any plant he wanted to replace it but he didn't want anything. I think asking nicely helps. I wouldn't assume that the owner of an infected plant doesn't give a hoot. I first had a plant with RRD about 16 years ago. Since that time I've lost more plants but not a lot. I haven't counted them up but it's somewhere under 20. It probably averages out to about one a year. That's bad, but not so horrible that it's worth getting depressed about it. It hasn't spread like wildfire ( yet), and it hasn't spread to adjacent roses. What worries me most is the untended mass plantings of Knockout in the area. It is ridiculous to be fatalistic about that and just sigh and say how awful it is. Should do something, like contact the town or business....See Morenicole___
