Comments (23)Wow I've been completely missing these threads! I have such limited time and I don't usually come to NE forum much because unfortunately it's so quiet, and this didn't pop up in the "new threads" listing. Glad I checked! I'll have to go back to May too. And yes, I definitely check the links to past threads too! As usual I don't have much to post - not great about taking pictures. Or at least not good about getting them from my phone to my computer. A few unknown irises, just about finishing up I have some unknown yellow irises that are totally wowing me this year. They have been in bloom for WEEKS!! I do have pictures on my phone lol. Wish I knew what they were. I transferred them two seasons ago from a neglected bed, and they have multiplied nicely and are just non-stop! Rose - either Amelia or Ashley Some reseeded campanula. I love the way this pops up around my yard. This is peeking out of a hydrangea (ignore the bittersweet - I'm getting to it!) My Zephrine Drouin (and therefore the Rooguchi that was in with it) got knocked off my arbor by strong wind earlier this season. No time to get to it and then saw buds forming all along the topside of the fallen rose, so left it until after bloom. Here are a couple of photos of the mess lol Such lovely photos everyone! MG George once gave me a styrax japonica that was very similar to your halesia. Actually, it was kinda funny - he gave me one, quite a good size, and it just didn't make it through winter. Next swap he asked about it and I had to tell him the sad news. "Dee, no problem. I give you another" and he did! Another good sized one. So generous! Well wouldn't you know a tree fell the next year or two, a huge oak, and totally smashed the styrax. I didn't have the heart to tell George - and knowing him he would have given me a third one! And that was more than I could take lol. I think of George every time I see a styrax (which isn't often, at least not in the wild, only in articles and catalogs) and your tree reminded me again! :) Dee...See MoreAugust 2023 - How is your build going?
Comments (128)@g m The garage floors were just over $6300. Unfortunately, since they've been installed we've started noticing several spots that are bubbling. We're very disappointed and I'm not sure what the remedy will be. (My SO wants them to grind it all off and start again with a different company - I'm hoping we can do something less drastic. It's in our GC's hands.) Note that this is an older garage and not part of a new build. Not sure if that makes a difference (they did fill cracks and pits ahead of time), or if it made a difference that they started the work during a stretch of 100* / high humidity days. Sigh....See MoreSeptember 2023 How's Your Build Going?
Comments (141)Hello folks. We are installing fiber cement lap siding on our new home. Me n my beautiful wife. So although we move slower we can get er done. Hopefully we will get the corner n window trim started. On the inside we are getting all the wiring that needs to be done in the attic. About 80% complete. Then vapor barrier, sheetrock. We will blow in cellulose insulation in the cold attic. Near r-65-70. We have - r 21 rockwool fire n sound insulation in the walls. And adding 2" of pinkboard on the inside after we install the vapor barrier over the rockwool insulation. This will add another r 7 to the outside walls and provide a continuous barrier against heat transfer. A system used in northern regions of Switzerland. We have an oil burning drip stove in the living room running for heat until we get the utility room built and the boiler installed. And the water tank and indirect water heater. Right now we have a 1" pipe through the cement coming from the well pump. Again glad I can do most of the work. I bartered a snogo for hooking up the boiler. I paid 800 bucks for it 25 years ago and riding it since so good trade for me. We will continue to pick away at things and somehow they get done. We have each other and our family near....See MoreOctober 2023 How is your Build going?
Comments (154)My Goodness, lots of drama. @Kelly M That was one of the (many) times I struggled to keep my patience in check, because you really are at their mercy... @pgjs Oh, I am so sorry about the ceiling wood. I hate that for you. @2rickies I swear that one day when I ran to the store, I returned to discover, Kyra Sedgewick wandering through my build. We are so far into it that I'm not sure why she thought it was fine--you'd think the barking dog upstairs would have clued her in that it's nearly a "home.". She meant to go to the build two doors down, looking for the architect. Whether or not it was really Kevin Bacon's wife, I don't know, but good lord, if it wasn't, she sure has a double. And no, I didn't act goofy and star struck and get a picture. She just apologized profusely when I found her walking out, and complimented me on the house and we chatted about the community. My feeling is...I wander through builds, especially if I know they are investment properties, but once the doorknob and finishes arrive, I don't go in. I feel others should afford me the same respect. I know people like to see how it's all being crafted and pulling together, so I don't mind. If it makes people uncomfortable, they can post no trespassing signs. I don't ignore those. When we bought the house we currently live in, the former owner just walked in one day to see what renovations we were making. I had never met her. Then I discovered she was still using our mailbox and address for nearly a year. I was constantly returning her mail to the postman. I then caught her checking my post for some government check delivered to her, so eventually I had to call the DMV and post office to force her to change her address.. @Liz888 Yes, the build goes so slowly sometimes. I had a melt down last week, because we are only a few projects from our C.O. at this point. I want to be able to start moving in some of the "extra" furniture and projects I've accumulated. (We are not moving into beach house til we retire, so I've been collecting deals and they are cluttering up my home.) But to avoid hiring movers twice, Dh decided we needed to move everything in before Thanksgiving and live with bare bones in our current home... so more than just the extra stuff---everything must go down. I was not prepared for that, not for the speed nor the idea of an empty current home... SO then because I freaked out, he did a 180 and decided to slow down--he gave our builder/helper a few weeks off... Now I have no idea when the CO will happen. But at least the porch rails got painted!...See Morerouge21_gw (CDN Z5b/6a)
