Help! Very special plant needs your help. Is my lilly dying or???

Ive had a peace lilly for over 3 years now and sadly it is the only one left from my son's grandmother's funeral. All the rest were neglected by other family and died and I really want to save this one if possible. It had been doing great for the past few years but my mother came by and put it outside for sunlight and now it looks horrible. Is it just sunburnt or what is the problem. It also got kind of cold that day, in the high 40s low 50s. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Was it outside over night? It looks like cold weather damage to me without any further data.

Cut off the damaged leaves. It will send up new ones. This is one tough plant. I have two from funerals - one was in 1992 (Grandmother) and 1997 (Brother). I thought I lost both in 2007-ish from negligence or stupidity (not watering and then overwatering). I threw both on the compost heap. Over the summer the heap grew and grew. The next spring, my wife wanted me to move the compost heaps to somewhere else in the backyard. As I was digging, I found a green shoot about a foot down from the top of the heap. When I unearthed it, it was one of the peace lilies. A little further digging and I found the second one. I still have both of those today where they sometimes wilt (no water) and then back up after watering. These are very tough plants.

Here is one of them back in early September.

You're welcome. This is what the seed pods look like. When the petals fall off of the flowers, this is what is left. If left alone, they will ripen and split, like this: Flowering plants have one goal - to make seeds. If you trim them off before they ripen, the plant will "feel" like it needs to make more flowers (to make more seeds.) You can do it with scissors or pinch it off with a fingernail. Removing forming seed pods from any plant is called dead-heading. On pansies, there's a long stem attached to the seed pods. I usually try to trim those off as much as possible just because I don't like the look of them sticking up from the plant if left long after removing the pod at the end. You may want to leave a pod to ripen occasionally so you can get the seeds to grow more plants. The plants that grow from these seeds may look different from your original plants.

Hi! I have a couple of aloe plants I purchased last year. At first they were doing so-so, then having one in the window - sunlight from about 10am to sunset - it did really well. Produced lots of pups.....not sure what happened but the other one never quite "blossomed" as well. It's always been a bit scraggly. I have them both in plastic pots right now - with large drainage holes. I used the cactus soil (sometime last year) and they seemed to both start doing well. I took them both away from the window because at one point, they started looking like they were burning. So. The one with the pups is doing well....or at least better than the scraggly one. The scraggly one I have about 3-4 feet from the sunny window. It still looks very limp, some brownish looking leaves. One or 2 dried right up, but the others mushy. None of the leaves have shown any signs of wilting - they actually have always looked more plump than not. BUT, they are droopy, and going on the browish side. I have let the soil get more dry than wet (mainly to get rid of the stupid pesky teeny black flies that always seem to arrive when I bring home a new plant from the store...yes....I am a plantaholic)....so. My question.....should I move both aloe plants back to the window? Leave where they are? Repot? I have a picture of the scraggly one, but not of the pup one. Oh, there is a vent right under the window that the air conditioning blows through - more away from the window than towards it. :( This is the scraggly one Closer pic of scraggly in the spot it shares with the other plants Help!!!! Hey milly, Im in the uk and I use gritty mix, and I use reptibark from Amazon, turface I get from tesco cat litter, and perlite from anywhere, although I tend to leave out the bark these days because the only good stuff I can find I have to get from Amazon as reptibark and is too big so I literally spend hours in front of the tv with pliers breaking up the chunks! The things we do for plants... Perlite/turface alone does a great job ime, and I actually find it easier to water because bark sometimes "floats" to the top when watering. The cat litter is a tad on the small side, but as long as you screen the small bits it works great. Perlite is easy, normally very suitable sized particles, just screen out small bits, but make sure it doesn't come with any 'additives' like ferts. I would love to use a nice grit, cause perlite looks a bit garish, and always floats to the top because it's so light, also doesn't weight down plants all that great, but I can't for the life of my find a good source of grit which looks good and isn't expensive aquarium grit D: I'm sure @greenclaws will reply soon, but I'm guessing she adds abit of soil to increase water retention a bit? Gritty mix is fantastic, but is very gritty. For my drier succulents it's literally perfect, and it works great for other plants too, even my mango tree seedling! But you have to be reeeeeeaaallly vigilant with it, because sometimes it dries real quick and plants like jades can shrivel a bit and not achieve maximum growth potential. A bit of soil, while compromising gritty mix's aeration, can make the mix a lot more usable. I have jades in pure gritty, soil/perlite, and pure soil, and I do find my soil jades do better because I can't quite keep up with them. But only marginally. I dunno, that's my understanding anyway :P You also need to fert regularly with gritty mix. hope this helps a bit! Aaron

Dave, Thank you. I know they are leggy :( unfortunately, it's one of the only spots where I can actually grow halfway decent tomatoes other than the wood bed in the side yard. As a result, I always plant the more productive cherry type tomatoes knowing I will get a decent harvest, albeit smaller than if they were full plants. I promise though that they actually look worse than normal because I have cut a ton of leaves off because of early blight. It was one of the only options to control it because up until about the last week or two it literally would rain every day or two making applying daconil nearly impossible and I honestly didn't feel comfortable applying it that often. We got over 3" in a week about 2 weeks ago... This bed actually has problems retaining moisture because it is full of wood/bark mulch as it was when I bought it. I know that is bad and I was going to change the soil this year, but an injury earlier in the year made that plan a bust. I will be putting in new soil next year. When I pulled the one plant up, and checked the soil, it was fairly dry, not bone dry, but not saturated either. today was actually the first day I watered my plants since planting (other than to feed) since I planted them. It has been almost a week at least since it rained, and with it this hot, I thought it was a water issue. The ones wilting from the heat though and very mild and barely noticeable with only the top leaves showing problems in the absolute midday sun. As for the mulch, I do not know anything about where it came from other than it is straw that was bought from a hardware/ feed store up the street. It has been on the plants for 2 months since the day I planted them. The ones in the wood box bed have the same mulch and no problems are seen. I'm just wondering if I should pull the plant up or let it be? Do you think it could be a result of the miracle gro? That was the only thing that changed before this happened. Also, if it was bacterial wilt, would the cutting have recovered like it did? I'm not sure what to do at this point... Dawn

as i said in your other post.. NO houseplant should go directly outside into sunshine.. especially in FL since you are so close to the equator ...

she burned all the leaves off.. they will not recover.. place in full shade.. keep properly watered .. and it SHOULD releaf ..

it is significantly stressed..not hungry.. fert is not a response at this time...

the key is.. the sun should not have impacted the root mass at all.. so it should releaf ... all other things properly done ..

dont kill it with more love ... put it in shade.. and ignore it but for water .. WHEN IT NEEDS IT ...and not a moment sooner..

Your sun burned house plant looks to be a Dieffenbachia and not a lily.

Actually it is an Aglaonema : see leaf variagation. Dieffenbachia has various variegated cultivars, but not anything close to this. Ag’s should never be put out into sunlight (except pink Thai ags that can take some very early or late sun preferably dappled). and it is a tropical plant that should never get below 60F, better not below 65F.

it grows super slow.. so you can expect a leaf or two in a month or two. it might produce shoots from the bottom as it is a pretty mature plant. do not cut the canes (thick central stem) as without any leaves it might die. it takes little water even in warm temps, keep it on a dry side until it shows some new leaves.

i would trim only the completely yellowed burned leaves. Even half a leaf that is still green will help it to grow faster.
