Aren't their variables? Hand or machine milked? Adult or child doing the milking? IDK, never having milked a cow, but I'd suspect that not all milkers are equal.

Edited to add: I love this daily thread and don't want to sound like I am arguing I'm not, so I'm not one of those antichilidoggers but agree with the farm people that there do seem to be variables.

Far too many variables for there to be an exact answer. I'm not sure how one could even come up with an 'average' number. (I grew up on a farm with dairy cows.) So my guess is:

Somewhere between 100 and 500.

I asked my husband who grew up on a farm and also had dairy cows. He laughed. Then said it was impossible to state an exact answer with so many variables…type of milk cow, size of teats, milker’s hands and grip, etc etc, as others have mentioned.

It's a trick question...milk doesn't come from a cow's udder, it comes from the grocery store.

And, by the way, that 4.5 litres to make Jasdip's gallon is a Canadian one: about 3.85 litres to make a U.S. gallon.
