Laying LVP over wood and slate tile- help!

Hi all— unpopular opinion here but I’m going to float LVP over my existing floor that looks like a high school gym floor. yes… “wood is superior” but I cannot refinish them at this point in time with all that entails, and they’re a terrible glossy orange color thanks to the previous owner of the home. They also stop at the kitchen where there is a multi colored slate tile. So, my questions are:

has anyone laid LVP over hardwood and any tips? (They’re standard 2inch boards)
ever used CALI longboard LVP or Hewn LVP? Also considering Lifeproof but bummed they don’t have matching transition strips etc. any other recommendations to look into?
for the slate tiles… they are not flat… can I lay a fiberboard under to make more level?

That is a classic oak floor, I under no circumstances would ruin it with LVP over the top. As far as the slate no you cannot just lay something over the top. The LVP will not hold up and most likely you would break all the click locks.

I’m with millworkman and ABC. I know it’s no help to you, and you clearly state you hate them, but I vote for keeping those floors.

I wonder if our GC's proposal is overkill. We've just installed new PEX radiant heat panels over existing slab on grade, and now are considering having tile rather than 5/8" engineered wood above the radiant panels (Rehau Raupanel, 8" OC). The Raupanel installation specs diagram for tile installation shows the following layers: - ceramic tile (1/4" typical) - cement or mortar compound w/ mesh or rubber membrane (1/4" typical) [e.g. Schulter Ditra?] - Raupanel + PEX + furring strips - vapor barrier - concrete slab Our GC claims we need to: -tear out the Raupanel and furring strips. -have loops of Pex with a concrete overpour, -then plywood base, a 1/2" backerboard, - and finally the tile in thinset (I think). What's going on? I think the GC said this is for sufficient isolation from expansion, and the tear-out needed to keep the assembly from being almost 1" higher than the adjacent room (5/8" Owens Plankfloor above Raupanel). But some of the GC's solutions have been un-nece$$arily labor-inten$ive, so I've become alert to padded proposals. BTW, His partial quote, for the 50 sq ft room is: "Demo the existing wood furring strips and float the floor and install the owner provided tile. Total cost 2,100.00 (Note the base will be wood provided in an alternate price)" Does that make sense? What should I do next? ------ PS. Should we even be doing tile, vs. e.g., linoleum, if we may have a litter-box and/or pet food bowls in the room? I started imagining urine odor in grout....

A cementious floor filler made for the purpose is what you want to use. These are portland cement based products and are user friendly. They contain binders to help the product adhere to the substrate, so usually no primer is needed to install them. PlaniPatch by Mapei is a good choice and there are others made by Ardex, Laticrete and many more. These are essentially like self leveling underlayments, but they won't flow and level on their own. You need to mix them with water at the prescribed rate (drill with mixing paddle) and then place the product by working it with trowels and a straight edge board to screed the product where you want it to fill in the depressions. You don't have to complete the 'lift' in one application...these products usually stick to themselves very well, so you can build up and screed the product until you get it flat with the surrounding areas. By screeding I mean what you see concrete people do when they place a load of concrete and then work it with straight edges and trowels to get it to the desired level. The 48" spans worry me a bit, but as long as you don't have a lot of flex and bounce, it should work. Some floor people fill depressions with almost anything they can get their hands on...roofing felt, sheet flooring, almost any mass you can put in there to get the area flat. I don't do that, but I know others do. And I once filled in depressions in a concrete floor with cleaned and dry play sand, although I would not recommend that for the novice...and most manufacturers would not approve of that method (very difficult to get the sand to stay where you place it). The area where you live (super hot climate vs. temperate) will dictate which is more appropriate for your situation. Someone in Seattle would be happier with LVT than someone in Florida. In Florida, tile is the norm, whereas in temperate areas or areas with a true winter, the tiles would be poo-pooed by the next homeowner. The value of your home is also part and parcel as to what works. It would be ill advised to install $25K worth of tile if your home is only worth $100K. The opposite is true of course. The true measure should also be the homeowner themselves. There are LVT products out there that are phthalates free (more expensive) and allow or have cork underlayment as part of their construction (again, more expensive). The cork underlayment will help (a little bit) with the echo in the space. And BTW...both vinyl and tile will have almost identical issues with echo. The vinyl will be a SNICK better. If you add the cork (assuming it is allowed) it will be a bit better than that. But that's as good as it gets. Both have issues with noise. A vinyl plank with all the things you want = $4-$6/sf for material. Install is a bit cheaper than tile...but if this is glued down then it won't be much cheaper. At the end of the day, a HIGH END glue down vinyl plank with an allowed cork underlay (also glued) will cost the SAME amount as a nice porcelain tile installed. Once all the bills are paid, you are going to be within a few hundred dollars of each other. Which leads me to say - get what you want and what works for your family. Be aware of the inherent value of your home and your area but get what works for YOU. And remember: babies are only little for a few years. After that they become more adept at avoiding hurtful situations.

Demo. I'm never had bamboo flooring but, besides the concerns about making a moisture sandwich to rot and mold, I would be concerned about the expansion & contraction of the bamboo underneath the rigid overlay. What I understand about bamboo is that it is more wiggly than wood. Since you have engineered bamboo, probably doesn't move as much as a solid product would. There are other reasons to remove it--like avoiding having to undercut door casings and shorten up doors. Removing baseboard or compromise by having it buried behind flooring. Probably other reasons that I'm not thinking of, too. I would pry, scrape, whatever it takes to get it up & haul it to the firepit to get rid of it. There are going to be about a hundred responses telling you not to burn it. Fortunately, none of 'em know where I live. :-)

You’re so lucky to have those floors; work with them. Perhaps a consult with another flooring specialist or an interior designer will lead to a solution that allows you to use and appreciate these beautiful natural materials instead of plastic LVP that will only decrease the value of your home.

Plastic flooring traps moisture under it.... that moisture will warp the hardwood that telegraphs through the vinyl. Do you have a concrete sub-floor? DO NOT DO IT!!

Please just grin an bear your existing floors until you can afford the time and money to replace the slate with wood feathered in and then all sanded and stained to your liking. Really just patience is needed here.

Thanks for the input. I’ve been at a stall trying to design around these pieces and having trouble. To answer Q… this flooring is not on concrete subfloor- we are on a raised foundation on a slope. After more thought I think I will try to get a quote for laying similar wood in the kitchen and resurfacing if all to same color at some point. Seems expensive but probably around same cost as some of the engineered hardwood click locks and LVP I’ve seen… I guess I’ll find out. Anyone know what possible cost range would be? (I’m near Santa Cruz CA for reference)

Definitely have your local well vetted floor pro out to quote matching in the solid wood. The hardest part is demolishing the slate so you could save some money if you DIY that portion. But again, get some quotes from those that can see all your existing conditions.
