hate red roof color

I have a red/orange roof color and started painting the siding sage. It looks like christmas colors. Would it help if I painted the trim red the same as roof to blend better?

Can't see any sage. You might do better with a medium gray or taupe.

I think the color looks great. Not too "out there", not too vivid....perfectly reasonable color. AND, after reading your last post, it doesn't sound like you need to do anything anyway! The neighbor was just mildly critiquing the color - no need to even consider a change in color. No biggie.

IMO the gable does not belong on that house so no matter what color it is it will still not belong BTW neither do the shutters belong If you must keep the gable then you need to make it much wider and shallower more like a MCM portico

That is a very popular color, so hopefully you'll get used to it. I can't tell what your landscaping looks like, but maybe that's an area you can work on in the Spring. You don't need those shutters on the large windows if you want to change that. It looks like your front door is black. I like it, but it's not uncommon for people to have a contrasting door color. Why don't you update your post when the piles in the front of the house are gone and everyone can get a better look at your house and maybe make some more suggestions. When you take a new picture, pull back so we can see the whole house, including the garage if you have one.

Looks like youve got some good choices right within that shingle - browns, blacks, grays. YOu even have some red-brown in it which echoes your red brick. Of course you dont see that from a distance, but it still bodes well for finding some color harmony for your house! No, you dont need a "cool" gray, just something with less of the yellow that is currently emphasizing /pulling out the blue-ness (yellow-blue are contrasting colors, opposite on the color wheel). A warmish brown-gray (or gray-brown LOL) would better actually. Take a shingle to an independent paint store (likely to have better knowledge of their colors) and get a bunch of sample strips. The next step would be painting LARGE panels that you can move aound and observe at different times of the day. B

I don't see any sage that's been painted. I suppose red and green can look Christmassy... If you want to get away from the brown, I suggest a dark gray, white trim (white & black around the windows), and a nice rich dark brown stain for the railing and deck. I see you have an awning, a black & white stripe one would also be nice.

I have to agree green was not the right choice . I don't even like brown but to me that is the best choice with the red. I think dark gray will require all that wood to be painted. What is going on under the deck to me this would have the perfect spot for a multi level deck.

Original is the best. And why paint? When stain is so much easier?

Since you hate the red roof, that is the obvious thing to change. Because there is absolutely nothing that you can do to the cabin that is going to cause that red roof to recede into the background.

We have a cottage with reddish-brown siding and sagey trim. It lolooks great! You might consider a neutral brown between the roof and the green siding.

Here's the house in green (there are many greens and I don't know which one exactly is yours).

But I still prefer the house in brown stain or the dark gray.

Leave the trim. Your body color choice was off. You have a bright red roof and it needs something dark (brown or gray) to balance it. The white trim might work after the house body is a better color. Decide that after you've painted the main part of the house.

Same as what's already been said - a stained dark wood or charcoal tone with painted red trim would be so much more appealing and it does need to be a color with enough visual weight to stand up to that red.

Exterior stains come in such a beautiful array of woodsy tones and colors now, not only browns - lots of grays, gray-greens, blues, etc. SW can mix custom stain colors in any of their paint shades. Any color in a semi-transparent or even semi-opaque wood stain would work better than a solid opaque paint color because youd get enough wood tone and texture showing through to soften the effect.

Think carefully though about what stain colors go where - you do have a lot of wood there so you wouldnt want it to be all one monotone. Perhaps siding and deck posts get to be dark gray-brown or charcoal, decking in a natural cedar....? I dunno, lots of possibilities!

The darker charcoal (last photo posted by @Sabrina Alvin Interiors) is the lightest gray I would use against that strong red. You need to get samples (Samplize) to see what works.

You can see how charming a red roof will look with the right body paint. Don’t get discouraged and hate the roof. It’s a great roof! I wish we had one on farmhouse!
