As long as he's meticulous, should be no problem. I have a ThermaTru door, I stained it myself Labor Day last year using Zar oilbased stain (not gel), you pretty much have to paint it on and just *leave* it, don't wipe it off, just feather it out. Used Sikkens Cetol Door and Window satin over it. No new pics, but it's held up pretty well over the winter. The Zar does *not* touch up well (found out when I tried to pick some stray hairs out after it had dried) on the fiberglas so you really have to be careful. This was an oak grain but I used mahogany color. About 2 months ago (trying out cushion fabric) Originally (hadn't even put knob back on yet!) Closeup (ignore the stained pine to the right - was trying to decide if I should make inside of door the same color - answer was no, I need to find something that goes with the pine trim) A few dark spots where I tried to go back over where I picked out hairs Flash no flash sample with Zar brushed on and left on sample with 1 coat of Minwax gel (Cherrywood) left to sit and then wiped off per can instructions - didn't work I really didn't have a problem with the sidelights. my front door and side casings are white - but my trim is medium oak stain and I like the difference between the two of them together.

Hey gram, I'd love to see your door if you'd care to post a photo (hint, hint). Up close, my screen door is crap, no other way of putting it. I see quite a few on homes in my town so they must have been selling them locally at some point 20+ years ago. I've never seen them sold since. The wood is splitting at all the joints. It's a low-end door that looks kinda cute at a distance but is falling apart. Maybe I'll do a free CL if someone will just take it away. My house also faces west but there are only 7-10 days a year when I have to close my door against the heat, never the sun itself. The built-in blinds you got sound like they work great for you. I passed a 3/4 lite door today (no screen) and it looked so good. I think my cats are hoping I get a full lite so they don't have to stand on their hind paws to see out. They are a vocal full-lite lobby.

Depending on your door and finish it's probably time to either get out the putty or make cross-grain wood plugs to fill the holes. If you look in the corner of the glass you will find, in very small print, numbers and other information that can be used to identify the maker, the model, and perhaps even the order it was originally part of. With that a helpful door and sash place might be able to help you out with original parts.
