Help! Broken leader on weeping norway spruce
Comments (2)Some of the most beautiful Weeping Norway Spruce have their leaders cut off at 4 ft - 6 ft. They form a wide cascading umbrella shape. It looks like a totally different tree than the traditional up and over. It also fill a different space in the landscape. So unless you were tied to filling the vertical space make lemonade out of what you think is a lemon. I personally prefer the Norway growing horizontally and the Picea Glauca Pendula for the vertical space. Good luck and how about a picture....See MoreWhat Happens If You Cut the Top Off a Norway Spruce?
Comments (8)In many cases the trees will eventually develop new terminal leader(s). If you remove all but one you will sometimes get a reasonably normal tree that has lost a few years in growing taller. Other times you will get a tree with a strange crooked trunk. It may or may not help the bottom grow denser, no guarantee it will always direct extra growth there. If multiple leaders develop and are left to grow, you will have a weak multi-trunked tree prone to storm damage. Bundles of small seedlings are usually available in bundles of 10 or so for $10-$20 a bundle through many nurseries and soil conservation districts in early spring. They are very small but establish well. Maybe planting more each year at a low cost per tree would give you the option of removing those that do not have good form after a few years of growth. ...I would not want to buy nursery stock that has the terminal bud removed. Not a good way to grow an attractive, healthy tree....See Moremy Norway Spruce trees look like they are dying - please help me
Comments (11)Spruceman only checks in with us here very occasionally, but yes, his Norway spruce experience and advice is unparalleled. One thing that jumped out in OPs old original post is the paucity of sunlight-only 3 hrs. per day-falling on his trees. Combine that with close competition from larger and more well-established pines nearby, and it seems there would be some struggle here. Neverthelss, these tree species are very compatible, both having roughly the same requirements as well as growth rates (fast). I'd look to carefully trim some branches if any are especially inhibiting the newer trees. I'd pay attention to water needs as the older, more established plants are going to hog it up. And please, do not buy "fertilizer spikes". They are a bad idea whose time has come.......and gone. +oM...See MoreNorway Spruce main branch broke on young tree.
Comments (7)White pine shoot tip moths, I presume. Despite the name, this insect prefers Norway spruce. I've got a bunch that look just like that. Yes, the plant will re-leader readily. It's just that, on occasion, one ends up with a double leader. Then, some corrective action via pole pruner or loppers is called for. Otherwise, mostly not. It is helpful to eradicate the pest although I haven't done so in my plantation. I'm using eternal vigilance as my weapon....See Morebengz6westmd
