How about a closet with adjustable shelving? Decide what your greatest storage needs are.

If, after you remove the sheetrock, the space is still small, you'll have a mess to fix. It' go with a buffet. A quick google shows lots of options for 52" wide cabinets or storage systems.

If what you're looking for is a kitchen cabinet style unit, buy a 48" cabinet and place a filler panel (same finish as the cabinet) on each side, and your floating shelves above.

You mention a kitchen cabinet, but this is not a kitchen, based on the carpet in that area? I would nix any floating shelves. What would you be storing, extra dishes, linens, canned goods? I would try a free-standing piece before building something in…..because of the carpet.

I would think about casing on the opening to give that curtail something to by against.

Maybe try and match the other cupbaord. You’d have tons of storage for stuff that isn’t necessarily beautiful

If you want storage for large items, do you want to see them in open storage? Shelves and a closet door might be the best option.

Once you say “large items” my brain says “we need a door”. Large stuff can rarely be attractively arranged so make it a closed custom pantry/closet for all those large hard-to-fit items we all own.

Have a cabinet company come out and make you a built in. Just the bottom half of floating shelves are wanted.

Agree with needing more views and context- use of the adjacent room. Opportunity for storage, yes, but also there’s an electrical outlet, so consider whether want to enclose that or creat a nice surface material ( furniture puce vs counter material) keep enclosed as in use appliance inside ( seems less likely in carpeted room) , or need a small lamp, or serving. Or closed lower + upper cabinet with open space for inters, seasonal decor.
Doesn’t seem like open shelving above is good idea if intend “ storage, unless intent is lower closed storage with upper display shelves for curated accessories. Again is why need to understand the room this is in.
Need to take a good inventory of what needs storing so can think about the dimensions, & whether can be met by available second- hand furniture, stick cabinetry vs custom.

Agree with Patricia. What room is this and what kind of large items? Fancy platters? Glass pitchers? Kitchenaid mixer? Toaster oven? Coolers? Suitcases? Bulk-size bags of sugar? Gallons of wine? Dust busters? You didn’t tell us.

because buffet versus cabinetry doesn't matter if we think that the solution is a closet. it's rare that "large stuff we need to store" is pretty, so a door lets you put as much of it in there as you want!

Agreed. The function is huge when making a decision for the space. What comes to my mind is are you planning to display items? Use this as a servery for your guests to walk up and help themselves when entertaining. Or specifically storage for overflow of goods. I would begin there.

“large items taking up space in the pantry” include plate chargers, pitchers, etc. Collectively, they take up necessary space in the pantry (see doors opposite the vent intake).

The picture was taken in the dining room. The space in question is part of a pass through from the dining room to the kitchen (wood flooring).

Sounds like a Butler’s Pantry. So I’d go with lisevd’s idea.

I’m not hearing any reason for open shelving. Platters, pitchers won’t be usable in open storage.
A base cabinet provides deep but “ stoop down “ storage- ok though. But then you’ve got the upper space. You could do the coffee-
/ wine bar thing with a countertop and add wall cabinet above but then that cabinet is shallower - still could be good for pitchers, glassware, anything that fits on ~ 11 “ shelving.
Hence the questions about would you rather have more of a closet, with full doors, trimmed out to match pantry, simpler shelving , deeper at base.

Whether to hunt for a furniture item is matter of style & taste- if want to add an antique or vintage ( or good faux) wood tones or painted, for interest. In my experience it’s harder to get really deep such items- hutches or china cabinets not close to 24” + deep, so in a lot of cases you’d be putting emphasis in the beauty or fun/ quirkiness of the item, and using if for some things that fit, or re- purpose well, rather than getting storage more tailored to your possessions. So it just depends.
