I am looking for help identifying what is wrong with these two roses.

last year

The first rose arrived with mildewed leaves. i treated it with the spray solution of 3 parts milk to 1 part water once/week. it just started a new cane with leaves. the white is visible on the other longer cane as spots.

The second rose seems to have striations on one of the canes.

Your help is much appreciated!

Nola, they look fine but small to Winter over in Wisconsin. Roses should be going dormant in Wisconsin now.

In photo no. 1 I see what might be Mealybugs (or scale) on the stems.

The rose in photo no. 2 looks just fine.

Mrs. BR Cant is supposed to do very well here, and I have several on their own roots that look extremely promising. Her root system is massive. All are planted near concrete (about 6 ft. away), which is supposed to help keep any nematode populations down. It can be almost impossible to find any OGR on fortuniana, so I am planting what I want own root, and if they ever start faltering, I will either get cuttings custom grafted, or learn to do it myself. There are people that have had success with some of them on their own roots. Depends on what's going on in your yard. I've never had any issues with my lawn or any of my other shrubs, so maybe that's a good sign.

It could be. What you haven't been told is sometimes seeds can take a year or two, sometimes longer, to germinate. Much depends upon the condition of the seed when planted. Yes, you want the containers opened. Think about it. In Nature, the hips fall and rot, exposing the seeds which sit on the ground in the litter mulch. They frequently germinate all by themselves. Or, some critter eats the hip, digesting the pulp and fibers, passing the seeds encapsulated in "guano" where they fall to the ground and germinate. Sometimes, if the conditions have been appropriate and the plant in good shape, they sprout quickly. If the plant has been stressed enough, the seeds dried out long enough and conditions sufficiently unsuitable, they wait. I was sent fresh seed from R. Xanthina two years ago. I planted half last year with no seedlings resulting. I'd transplanted the seedlings surrounding them in the seed table and knew which were neighbors to the Xanthina seed. Suddenly, there were Xanthina seeds germinating in the other seedlings, the second year after planting. This year, I planted the second half of the Xanthina seeds in the tables. There are two seedlings from those seeds right now in the tables. Banksiae seeds are known to usually require two years to germinate. Several years ago, I had one germinate from freshly collected seed after only four months under soil. None of the others germinated before I reused the soil. This year, I planted a large amount of fresh Banksiae seed I collected in the garden. There are three seedlings right now from seed which has been planted only three, nearly four months. Bottom line is, you can set the stage for optimum germination in attempts to stack the deck to get what you want, but they are going to do whatever they decide to do based on a variety of factors. Lars, I rather thought the same thing about the TV cooks. . . but that's a heck of a lot of new equipment they must go through. Wonder if there's place they get rid of it. Hmmmm. . . . No, I really don't care if my f/p looks cloudy. I always am more interested in why it occurs. Along the same lines, my thoughts on when they put stuff in the over doesn't center on the gleaming racks. It's that the sound the racks make when the oven is hot is completely different than the sound they make when it's cold, so you know the oven is cold, even if they take it out later, steaming. I think I've also mentioned before that when I watch Giada the minute she first says "There we go" I quite watching for content and count how many times she says it. You would think I'd have something better to do with my mind, wouldn't you?

Thank you so much for your reply! I really appreciate all of the information. I didn't even think to pollinate all of them - I just did 3 because the videos I watched had only pollinated one or two and I thought that would be enough. Unfortunately, my all of my paternal plant's blooms have fallen off (too many suckers, a lot of the blooms were on their way out when I had bought them, but the plant itself looks very healthy. It's growing rapidly - I can't believe it. It's a good time to repot though, since it's not like I have to sacrifice my pretty little flowers). By the way, about how long does it take for new flowers to bloom after repotting? Once both plants are ready, I'll try again. I'm so excited! That's a great idea as well! I had just tied strings around the ones I pollinated. I had seen a few people take off the petals of their pollinated ones, but I wasn't sure how much of a difference it'd make. And even if that is just a superstition, I wouldn't be surprised if it were true. It may be the mother plant's fault - but I also don't know if I pollinated too late? The flowers had been quite open by the time I pollinated, and the paternal plant's pollen was also a bit old (though, I read older pollen is actually considered better in some cases). Thank you for the suggestion, I'll give it a go! Would getting a humidifier do the same job, or would it not help as much since all of the humidity wouldn't be concentrated in one little space? (I think all the plants could use a little more humidity) Will do :) Wow, your seedlings look great! The leaves are very interesting - good luck with them!

Hi Sheila, Thank you! I decided to overwinter with lights because they were so small when they arrived, in the past I have lost 50% of the small roses I planted in pots over the winter here. I did propagate 3 roses last fall (took cuttings September 1st) and overwintered in the mud room with lights, they were huge by the time I could plant end of April. I'm hoping to give these guys a chance to develop good root systems before planting in spring due to our shorter growing season. :)

Hi Paul, Thank you also! I will look those up. I was wondering if it was still mildew hanging about, but won't treat it for that now. The first photo is supposed to be Ellen Tofflemire, so looking forward to the first bloom!

Nola, if you overwinter 'Ellen T" indoors, it won't get the winter chill it needs to flower, so you won't get blooms next year. Its probably too late to move it outdoors now though, if you've had it inside for a while.

It has been around 40 degrees during the day and low 30's at night. I dug in the ground yesterday and it went like butter, but the rose does have new leaves... It's probably too late for outdoors so will have to wait for another year. Thank you for your advice, still learning every day. So grateful to be past the beginner phase and learning more in depth.

Sheila, I think I'll be as happy with it as I am Etienne, which I measured up yesterday at 75"x50". It's a glorious thing in the spring!

I'm waiting on Joyce Barden to bloom next summer so I can get it verified with Paul that that's what it is.

Still looking for Barbara Olivia and Umbra, it's out of stock still. Patience, patience... lol
