I am looking for help identifying what is wrong with these two roses.

last month

The first rose arrived with mildewed leaves. i treated it with the spray solution of 3 parts milk to 1 part water once/week. it just started a new cane with leaves. the white is visible on the other longer cane as spots.

The second rose seems to have striations on one of the canes.

Your help is much appreciated!

Nola, they look fine but small to Winter over in Wisconsin. Roses should be going dormant in Wisconsin now.

In photo no. 1 I see what might be Mealybugs (or scale) on the stems.

The rose in photo no. 2 looks just fine.

Mrs. BR Cant is supposed to do very well here, and I have several on their own roots that look extremely promising. Her root system is massive. All are planted near concrete (about 6 ft. away), which is supposed to help keep any nematode populations down. It can be almost impossible to find any OGR on fortuniana, so I am planting what I want own root, and if they ever start faltering, I will either get cuttings custom grafted, or learn to do it myself. There are people that have had success with some of them on their own roots. Depends on what's going on in your yard. I've never had any issues with my lawn or any of my other shrubs, so maybe that's a good sign.

I just wet the paper towel, fold it to about 3mm thick and put the seeds inside, fold it over, put it in a small self seal plastic bag with no holes, put it on the bed of the heated propagator and they germinate in a few days, I dont crack or remove the shell of the pips at all they grow fine on there own, once germinating I move them over to small compost pots about 3oz in volume filled with compost made from 1 part peat, 1part grit/sand and 1 part garden soil, and then put them back in the propagator with a small plastic bottle over them as a mini greenhouse, just until they get growing I always put the pips in the refrigerator for a few days before germinating as it seems to speed the germination up.

Dantis, I saw your post and wanted to add an observation I've had. I don't know how old your lawn is, or your neighbor's lawn, but my KBG lawn is in it's 3rd summer right now. The first summer I used lots of Synthetics - Looked fabulous. Second summer, used lots of Synthetics - looked good. When it started looking less than great, I'd to buy a bag of Scott's weed & feed and throw that down. It would perk up, but only temporarily. This spring, it looked like hell. It was one of the last ones to green up and the thatch was unbelievably thick!!! The same thing happened to me in my first house - I was only there 3 years, but it was the same thing. Year 1 - Excellent lawn, Year 2 - Good Lawn, Year 3 - lots of fighting to keep it green. It seems that with a Synthetic lawn, unless you aerate and/or dethatch it AT LEAST once per year, the thatch builds up (at least in KBG), and really creates a problem. I just wasn't excited about spending $100 to have my lawn aerated once or twice a year. I found this forum because I was being a cheapskate and figured there had to be some sort of 'natural dethatching' method :) Don't get me wrong, I don't mind spending $100 on my lawn to make it look great - I'm just not excited about spending $100 for a temporary solution that my fertilizing practices would ruin. Reading up on the ecosystem of the lawn and how it works really made a lot of sense to me, so I figured I'd give it a try. I have a long way to go to improve my soil (clay), but my lawn has made great strides. The thatch is under control, and, even though I'm watering more than I'd like, I'm still watering a LOT less than the neighbors, and my lawn looks MUCH better! I'd rather spend $100 on soybean meal, corn gluten meal, etc., than an aeration any day. So, I guess my point is, your neighbor's synthetics will catch up with him/her eventually...Again, just my observations and opinions...

So....I finally get to a big piece of info that I didn't know about. Apparently ALL our plants are on the same drip line. The landscape guy only put in one line back there when he did the wall. UGH! I had no idea about this. So, this means I can't do anything right? If I bump up the water on my palms/tropicals, I drown my roses, right? If I water the palms seperately say with a bucket or something, how much and how often? I didn't go down a full foot, but I was able to try and go down a few inches and it's pretty dry, yeah. About the Philo, yeah, all the tropicals minus the palms went in March/April-ish. The philo was really doing good and now it's just become so hot. I am trying so hard to find out what to do. I am upset w/the nursery we purchased all our stuff from because they're not calling back at all to help w/advice. The bird of paradise and our canna are doing amazing. Everythign else I am trying so hard to figure out what to do so I can save them. This heat sure is not helping me either. --Terra

Hi Sheila, Thank you! I decided to overwinter with lights because they were so small when they arrived, in the past I have lost 50% of the small roses I planted in pots over the winter here. I did propagate 3 roses last fall (took cuttings September 1st) and overwintered in the mud room with lights, they were huge by the time I could plant end of April. I'm hoping to give these guys a chance to develop good root systems before planting in spring due to our shorter growing season. :)

Hi Paul, Thank you also! I will look those up. I was wondering if it was still mildew hanging about, but won't treat it for that now. The first photo is supposed to be Ellen Tofflemire, so looking forward to the first bloom!

Nola, if you overwinter 'Ellen T" indoors, it won't get the winter chill it needs to flower, so you won't get blooms next year. Its probably too late to move it outdoors now though, if you've had it inside for a while.

It has been around 40 degrees during the day and low 30's at night. I dug in the ground yesterday and it went like butter, but the rose does have new leaves... It's probably too late for outdoors so will have to wait for another year. Thank you for your advice, still learning every day. So grateful to be past the beginner phase and learning more in depth.

Sheila, I think I'll be as happy with it as I am Etienne, which I measured up yesterday at 75"x50". It's a glorious thing in the spring!

I'm waiting on Joyce Barden to bloom next summer so I can get it verified with Paul that that's what it is.

Still looking for Barbara Olivia and Umbra, it's out of stock still. Patience, patience... lol
