Help! Hideous wall color has to be changed!
Comments (8)ncookin, sorry this happened to you. It's a sickening feeling, been there, done that. Let me ask, does it look horrid day and night or one or the other? I know the color in my office at the house is Nantucket Gray and it looks beautiful in the daylight, but at night, OMG, I cringed when I saw it. So I've decided to put in lots and lots of light in the room. I've only seen it with the low wattage halogens we have in the recessed fixtures, but am hopeful with lamps and uplights the color will look better. I also plan on usin fabric and artwork that will have a cream background to help break up all that dark. I hope all of that will make it livable for me. I can't repaint or I should say DH will not repaint and I can't blame him. So I have to figure out a way to make it work. Ugh!! I think part of the problem with mine is I let DH chose the office furniture and he chose dark, then we have the olive green granite, so we have a very dark room. Actually it's the only dark room in the house. I was trying for the library affect, but I'm not a library girl. I like pastels but didn't have the heart to expect DH to work at a white desk in a light blue room. LOL I do hope you can remedy rather than have to repaint....See MoreWhich color for fireplace return?
Comments (20)Cottonpenny, what I was trying to say was to add one row of stone running vertically on each side that would hide the front where the stone is applied to the fireplace front - to give it a more finished look and heft, without having to apply stone to the sides all the way. I have one other thought, and that would be to apply wood to the sides, stained to match the cabinetry. But if painting is the only choice right now, I would go with the color on the left. In your last pix that you posted, where we can see the swatches and a bit of the wall color, I think it works the best. The middle one is too blue, and I think the one on the right is going to be too dark, fighting with the dark cabinetry....See MoreHideous fireplace
Comments (11)Can you post a picture from further away so we can see the entire fireplace from floor to ceiling. I may be able to come up with some design concepts for you. Also, post a picture of the entire room so we can see the decor. What you have is an old Heatilator wood burning fireplace. Someone retrofit it with a ventless gas log. If you intend on using the fireplace, the general consensus among professionals is that you cannot remove or cover up those vents as not only do they serve the purpose of circulating heat, they also help keep the metal burning chamber of your fireplace cool. I have heard of some who removed the stonework and rerouted the vents to the sides to make them more obscure. Otherwise, you have to design around them, which is tough to do. I see these several times a week as I sell fireplace doors and people are always sending me pictures. We provide vent covers that match the doors we sell as a way to tie them into the fireplace a little better, but it's hard to make the disappear. Most of these fireplaces have a single vent at the top and two at the bottom, but often times there are 4 like yours. I have provided some pictures of ones where we provided glass doors and vent covers just so you can see you are not the only one with this type of fireplace. Notice how some of them have slots in the masonry instead of vent covers. If your fireplace does not have fans beneath the bottom vents that are wired, removing the stone and adding a different facing may allow you to put slots directly into the new facing to build them into the design a little better. Here's are some examples of fireplaces like yours: Provided by: Hansen Wholesale Fireplace Glass Doors...See Moretoo many wood colors- which do I paint?
Comments (5)I think you are for sure going to need to paint the wall paneling and the fireplace wood. Your floor is cool and those woods are warm. Paint all the trim, too. I’d personally rip out that paneling and the wood on the fireplace and and dry wall it. I’m not even sure how well the floor color works with the fireplace stone, but assess that after painting out the other areas. After all that, take a look to see if the beams work. You could do a white or perhaps a greige. Hard to tell without more info/photos....See MoreJeff Smith
