Should we paint crown molding that wraps around cabinets same color?

My wife and I are currently building a custom home.

We have crown molding painted in SW semi gloss alabaster that goes through out the entire home.

In the kitchen, the molding wraps around our hood mantle as shown in the picture. Our cabinets are obviously a different color, and we are trying to decide if keeping it as is would look best, or if we should consider painting the molding the same color as the cabinets in the circled area.

My wife and I think it would look best if painted the same color as the cabinets, but our concern is how the transition between colors would look in the corner. Are there any best practices in handling molding transitioning between two different colors?

Why not paint all of the crown molding Alabaster in the kitchen? Is there a point where it would need to transition from Alabaster to the original color?

All of the crown molding IS currently alabaster in the kitchen as well as the entire house.

We are considering painting the crown molding that wraps around the hood mantle (circled in red) the same color as the kitchen cabinets. If we do this, yes then there would be two points in the back corner where the color would transition from the cabinet color to alabaster. Hope this makes sense!

I would never attempt to "contrast" the whites. I think it would be very hard to do so without one of the whites looking dingy or at least "yellowed." If you're concerned with whether the moulding will stand out enough, trust me, just the difference between flat and semi-gloss will make it stand out. JMHO

When you signed off on the cabinet order, was the order placed right away or did it wait until the molding price came in? I bet you are being penalized for placing a separate small order and they may have a minimum shipping charge that you would not have had to pay if the molding had been ordered at the same time. Do not mention it until you get an answer, but if yes, it is more for that reason, you should let them know you expect they will take care of this without penalty to you and speak with a manager if necessary. They should not have placed your order until it was complete if it would cost you more to do wo without discussing it with you. If they didn't, you should not have to abosrb the cost. If you are still within the time when you can cancel the entire order with minimal/no loss, you might nicely inquire if that is possible while you work this out, and then place the order again with everything included. Before you say anyththing else you might want inquire if this is the case. The fact that the labor for the molding was included in the original contract clearly indicates that they were aware that you wanted it. And, yes, I think molding makes a huge difference in the finished look of the kitchen even if it is a very simple molding. The one exception might be a galley type kitchen or a contemporary style. JMHO. Unless DH is exceptional, most men don't place anywhere near as much importance on aesthetics as you would, but chances are when you go to sell, the molding will pay for itself. Sue

I think it does come down to the fact that I'm not 100% certain of his competency. We've had so many incompetent people involved in this remodel (costing us time and money) that I just don't want to take a chance on this. For example: --Contractor's assistant decided to cut drywall ON TOP of the piece of MARBLE we just had cut for the master bath shower bench (you can imagine the outcome of that) --Contractor's sub / electrician knocked holes in newly hung drywall in order to access what he wanted in order to avoid doing it the right way due to being "too much work." This same person also cracked/chipped about 8 slate floor tiles in the basement while working at the electrical panel. --Floor company took 3 weeks to complete hardwood staining/refinishing only to majorly screw up (I posted photos in another thread) the floor, leaving us to find another company to do it all over again. We've since been living in our basement for over 2 months. So...I could go on and on and on - those are just a few of many things. And so far we haven't asked our contractor to pay for even ONE thing he or his subs have screwed up. We simply want him to finish the job and GET OUT! Since everyone involved in our remodel seems to be having financial issues, we're lucky if anyone even shows up to work, much less have any idea when our "5-6 month" project which has stretched into 10 so far will be finished. Just to close out this thread for future reference - painted the crown white in all areas where it was not over the cabinets, and it looks a LOT better. Should have been done that way from the start. Left the crown over the cabinets (which is the same design, just different color) as white chocolate, which also looks right. The only tricky part in this was painting the crown where the two colors meet. I did a decent but not perfect job, I will probably go back over it with a fine paintbrush to get a perfect line.

Paint the molding circled the same as the cabinets. Leave the other molding the color it already is.

Allllllll Crown upper attached to cabinets must match cabinets, or look like hell : ) That means your circled hood, and all other spots unseen in your pictures.

I retract my previous statement regarding 2 crown colors after looking at the photo more closely. I now see continuous 3-piece crown. What appeared to be only above the hood actually runs throughout.

Cabinet color on all 3 sides of hood crown to end at the wall inside corner (or replace all uppers with boxes to the ceiling 😉) is what I see most.

Nice 3pc crown, says custom without you having to.

It's unfortunae that the middle section of cabinets pops up above the other cabinets. This is a trend that I earnestly wish would go away.

Fortunately.........The high low cabinet trend has mostly disappeared. It was always a bad idea.

Coming back to say that if your cabinets were painted by your cabinet maker using sprayed catalyzed paint finish, it will not match if you have it painted with a regular paint. BTDT and learned my lesson the hard way. I would have the crown molding removed around the hood (3 sides) and take it to the cabinet maker to be sprayed the same finish as the cabinets. Then it will need to be reinstalled. I tried to color match my catalyzed cabinet paint once to paint the crown and there was always a noticeable difference in color and sheen.
