Is there a standard amount of outlets per room/sq ft.?
Comments (35)JDS, I don't know where you are in the country but for a residential house I only charge $90 per receptacle opening. Yeah, I've been told "about $100 per receptacle", but this meant wiring a new house -- not adding one outlet to an existing house. At that price, it's not a budget breaker, but putting in an extra few in every room "just because" would be a wasteful expenditure. And obviously some receptacles will cost more than others: The grounded outlet near your bathroom sink will cost a little more than the ones around the edge of your bedroom. The single outlet in your attic will cost more than the couple sets placed close together for your great room TV area or your computer desk. I assume that the new outlets that include USBs run a little more than standard units. So you should expect some slight variation. The goal shouldn't be to over-wire or flood the house with electrical outlets; rather, the goal should be to plan carefully and "right-size" your electrical needs....See MoreDoes $100 per sq. ft sound good?
Comments (15)Our home is 2178 sq ft and we are building it for $220,000. We told the GC we really wanted to keep it at or around $200,000. Now, the GC knows my sister and he is doing a lot of work himself. We also are going with laminate counter tops, and no 'extras' right now, like crown molding, etc. We went with a shingle roof instead of metal roof. We limited our paint colors and we are painting DD's room ourself (she wants a themed paint). We wanted to be able to do a little bit higher end but it is always something we can change/add later on down the road. We really wanted something we could afford right now and I really am not a fan of granite but I love natural stone. Can't afford that right now! LOL! The only problem we see so far is the flooring. We are on a VERY tight budget and I know we will go over on that. Our cabinets, the builder is staining them himself instead of the cabinet maker. We also have been buying light fixtures here and there out of pocket and the plumbing fixtures I plan on getting off of ebay. Where there is a will there is a way! Oh, that price also includes our septic, and well. We own the land. I really think it all comes down to your choices on things as to really how much you are going to spend....See MoreBallpark sq.ft. cost for adding family room
Comments (18)thanks everyone for your input....has given me an idea of what I might expect. Would have done this several years ago, but could not find a contractor in the area who was doing remodeling....the new construction was so much more profitable and probably less problematic. Now that construction has slowed, I'm hoping I'll at least get some callbacks! Ron6519-thanks for straightening me out about how the separate structure doesn't save $ and hendricus..sounds like a great job you did - great to have those skills! Comments (12)Personally, I would never build a new house with 10' wide bedrooms. My current house has 2 bedrooms that are 10' x 11' 4" they feel they feel tiny to me with a full sized beds. But this is a 1179 sqft 1983 tract home so it is expected. If I were looking at a resale house in the 1800-1900 sqft. range that had bedrooms that small I would keep looking. Were it my house, I would keep the bedrooms at the original size. It is only 46 sqft. larger for both bedrooms but it will make an enormous difference in their feel. But that's just me. It is your house so build what you are comfortable with. Funny thing, I did exactly the opposite with the house that I am currently building. The original plans came out at 1850 sqft. but after several months of bumping this wall out and stretching that room I ended up at 2109. And the garage got even bigger. I didn't really want to go that big but to get everything to feel right to me that's where it ended up. Best of luck in whatever you decide to do....See Moreacm
