I guess a question in my original post would help. Also my apologies on the picture. It looked fine on my phone. :) My son likes a stool with a back, but I am thinking a black leather topped stool with no back might be the way to go. If I went for a stool with a back, should I go with a simple black leather look, or try to match the cherry? Thanks, Jo

numbersjunkie, do you mean counter height = same as the rest of the kitchen counters? I would like to go a little above the rest of the kitchen counters because I would not want to see dishes or any kitchen mess while in the dining room. Right now our kitchen counters are 36 3/4" and the end eating counter is 43" high. We are keeping much of the layout but now is the time to make changes since all cabinets and counters will be replaced. Any suggestions?

I would consider getting barstools that tuck completely under the island countertop. This makes a cleaner appearance and also creates a much more usable space since the backs of the stools do not stick out when you are not using.
