affordable 36 Inch Gas range - any recommendations

Hello,

We are in process of purchasing 36 inch gas stove which does not break the bank and would like to stay under $5000 (CAD) if possible.

Below are the Brands which seems to fit our budget

Thor Appliances
Cosmo
NXR

We also saw Kitchen-aid and Bosch though they seem to be out of budget.

We want something which is looks great and is reliable.

Any recommendations or other suggestions..

Judging from reports on this forum, none of those 3 you listed is reliable. And as mentioned above, when something goes wrong, there is no customer service. Whatever brand you buy, always check if there is someone locally who can service it. Do any of the appliance repair places near you service any of those brands?

If your budget is constrained, please explain why you want a 36” range. Note that the oven will take longer to heat up and use more gas to do so.

If you are set on the 36” width, the Bosch is a better bet. Also check GE or GE Cafe. I am sorry, but something has to give - either your budget needs to be bigger or you need to go to 30”.

You will need a hood that is 36” wide over the 36” range, but preferably 42” wide. And the correctly sized ductwork to go with the 36-42” wide hood. Do you have that in your budget also? If you do not, it might be best to go with a 30” range.

Well, the Frigidaire is certainly "more affordable", but it's, well, a Frigidaire and pretty crappy. Look at Bertazzoni if you value looks. If you value performance, look at NXR, Capital, or Blue Star. Those will actually give you the ability to sear your stir fry. But, ALL of these will need an upgraded ventilation system, and that upgraded ventilation system may possibly need make-up air in your location. You're not picking something in isolation here. It's all chosen to work together.

I wanted to contribute my experience- we got the capital culinarian all gas 48" w/ the griddle (so we have 6 burners) within the past year and I have been using it for a few months. I LOVE LOVE LOVE our decision!! I too did a lot of research and did not read many negative reviews about it- and they are very well built, pretty, and simple design-wise (my husband is a contractor and thought they were most similar to the commercial ranges he has worked on, i.e. if something breaks it would be easy to fix). I probably wouldn't need 6 burners just for cooking- but it is nice to have. I also do a lot of canning/preserving, and do use 6 burners at the same time (simmer for warming lids, canning pot, pot for extra hot water, pot w/ stuff to be canned, pot w/ syrup for the stuff to be canned, one pot w/ dinner cooking). My husband loves the griddle- very easy to make breakfasts, hot sandwiches, etc. You could always do 4 burners and a grill/griddle as an option if you don't can/need 6 burners. Also, I really enjoy the big oven on the 48" (not sure how this compares in size to the 36" since the 48" has a large and small oven and the 36" one large oven). It can fit 9x13" pans side by side, and cookie sheets. The roll out racks aren't as smooth as some of the other brands we looked at (we liked the thermador racks the best- very smooth) but they work pretty well. Also, I haven't had any problems w/ the baking heat/evenness, and our oven is gas (which I think is typically worse than electric ovens?). I haven't baked bread yet- but have done a lot of other foods (cookies, casseroles, etc.). So if it were me I would definitely do the 36" over the 30" :-) It sounds like you would use it w/ all the cooking that you do. If you have any questions about mine please let me know :-)

We have had the 36" Blue Star range (model RCS36SB) for about 5 years and would not recommend it. The knobs get very warm and we have had problems with the convection fan as well as ignition (gas would build up in the oven while it failed to ignite), both problems required multiple service visits The latest problem, the oven knob broke off and Bluestar said they no longer manufacture the part. Bluestar said they changed from a mechanical thermostat to an electronic thermostat and the ”upgrade” would cost $350 to purchase, not including installation (total cost estimated at least $500). I assume they redeigned the oven knob/thermostat because they had so many problems with the knob, convection and ignition. Even though it was under warranty and the knob broke due to faulty design, the service manager refused to provide a replacement part. I guess you can expect problems to occur with any appliance, but I do not expect them to provide such poor service, especially when they know it broke due to their own design flaw. It takes them days to follow up on service questions. Best to stay away from Blue Star.

Consumer Reports can be a little misleading. There might be several reasons someone would like a prostyle range and some are performance related. -For one thing there is a lot more room front to back. I use big pans so appreciate that. -You have the option of 36 and 48" ranges. There are a few inexpensive 36" ranges for $900 but the burners are like the simmer burners (9K BTUs) on the prostyle ranges. For 60", some people use two 30" ranges together but those are available too. -You have many choices in burner. You could have star shaped, triple ring, dual stacked, uncapped. Some of these features provide better heat distribution for cookware that is not all that great in that way. If a burner is uncapped, the heat can go straight up. There are a few inexpensive ranges that do not have caps too. You could have 25K BTUs with an uncapped burner and more heat goes straight up. Some capped burners go up to 21K or so but they start getting a lot more flare so not as good for a wok or smaller pan. --You might have an "open" burner tray, which some people like because it breaks down for cleaning. Others don't want to have to do that. -The broilers on an all gas prostyle range are usually infrared which is a lot better than a regular gas broiler. -You can have an option of a thermostatically controlled griddle if you want it built in and grill. I would also consider getting a rangetop and a wall oven or two vs the range. You can pick the best burners, oven or a combi oven. A 36" oven is a lot more to heat up and may not be much bigger than your 30" range you have now. You have to look at the rack size vs the capacity listed in square feet. A lot can depend on rack placement and placement of the convection fan. Look at the height above the rack. Some 36" gas ovens in a range hold a full commercial baking tray or two half trays side by side. Some 30" gas ovens do too but it is tight. One electric oven does, BlueStar that I know of.

I agree with the above comments that you should avoid the brands you listed. The only other brand along with Bosch and Kitchenaid you might consider is this one:

We are building with builder and the house is in active construction. At time of our design center appointment, we opted for 36 inch stove and that can not be changed now.

Between Kitchenaid and Bosch, which range would you recommend ?

CR tested the 30" versions of those ranges (KitchenAid KFGC500JSS and Bosch HGS8055UC) and neither performed well. The Bosch was particularly bad at baking and boiling but a 36" model may perform better. At least it was predicted to be more reliable than the KitchenAid. The Monogram ZGP304NTSS tested well but the 36" ZGP366NTSS is prohibitively expensive in Canada. Maybe go for the Cafe CGY366P2TS1 which is similar, but not identical, to the Monogram and is much cheaper. There's also the Frigidaire PCFG3670AF.

I would recommend the GE Cafe 36” all gas range. With discounts, retail is about $5,700USD. Better burners, better burner layout, wifi-control. The 3 brands you mention are all made in CHINA.
