How can I make my kitchen look more contemporary?New canisters?(p
Comments (32)I'll chime in as a fan of contemporary myself, and a not-so-much fan of country. Your kitchen definitely has a country look to it for reasons already posted. The natural color oak cabs unfortunately don't fall into any description of contemporary, but I would expect touching the cabs to be off the table. If you need canisters for practical reasons (e.g. storage), then consider stainless steel. I got a nice set from Costco for not much money, and Crate & Barrel also have nice ones. Your family room has a contemporary look to it (with the exception of the table lamp). If you look at the elements there in comparison to your kitchen, what you see are solid colors, clean lines, and a lack of nicknacks. Look at the window treatments in particular. Solid color valence, and solid color drapes. Also look at the artwork over the fireplace. Dramatic dark frame that matches the color of the fireplace below, complementary colors in the matting, and a repeating dark brown mat towards the inside. So ask yourself, "how do I bring these design themes to my kitchen?" Well, replace the window treatment with a solid color. I would recommend a dramatic color that matches some other elements in the room such as your counters. Vertical pleating such as you have now is more country. No pleating (like your window valence in the family room) or horizontal pleating (like in roman shades) are more contemporary. Although roman shades always have a summer beach house feel for me, but that's probably just me. For the stuff on top of the cabinets, you should replace them with repeating items in solid or repeating colors. For example you could use a dozen clear/colored art glass plates that again match the counters. The key here is to use multiples of the same item in the same or similar colors, whereas currently you have a mix of disparate items (plate, jug, basket, bottle, etc). Anyway you get the idea - repeating elements, repeating colors, simple lines, no clutter. Those things say "contemporary" to me. Good luck and I hope that helps a little....See MorePlease help with layout and how to make kitchen bigger
Comments (7)It seems from the pic that the wall I circled is set back slightly from the edge of the pantry wall. Here's an idea, which eliminates the built in pantry beside the oven, and puts shallow pantries on the circled wall. They could be framed as closets, or pantry cabinets. That would allow you to center a range on the short wall, which provides more counter space. If you prefer the cooktop and separate oven, maybe you could consider an UC oven under the secondary prep counter, or a wall oven between the fridge and DW. I moved the fridge down (I think that angled wall might be shorter than drawn on your plan), but I think the plan would work without moving the fridge. I put overhangs on two sides of the island, since that's more conducive to conversation. I don't know if this quick idea meets your needs, or if you're interested in more changes. Good luck! click to enlarge Another idea--if you'd like the fridge and pantries to be near each other, the fridge and range can be switched m/l, with a MW/snack area beside the fridge. In this plan, the MW area could be MW/wall oven combo, with a cooktop where the range is drawn....See MoreHow do I make my figs bigger?
Comments (12)HU, it is not the container that make the figs bigger, a larger container such as a 25g will produce a larger Plant as the container will support a larger root system. Some fig strains naturally have bigger figs while other fig types have smaller figs. Think of mulberry fruit some types are naturally bigger than others. You can experiment by pruning the ends of your fruiting branches and pruning any new shoot growth immediately from said branch to limit the fruit set and most likely the figs on branch may grow slightly larger but at the cost of less fruit to eat. As for potting mix you will get many different answers to that question some make their own , at my age i prefer to buy name brand potting mixes such as Pro Mix and once in a while add lime and also fertilizer. Comments (9)Thanks Trudy. I don't think I'd get any truly impactful useable space by just extending out the final 3' to the edge of the porch. I'd run into lots of pushback from dh and our architect if I were to try to bump out the other direction so it is probably a no-go. We did have the foundation designed to enclose in the future, as well as setting the height of the bottom of the support beams for the porch roof structure to slightly higher than the interior ceiling height. I just don't see enclosing it, ever. It's an old craftsman-style house with all the detailed trim added in (dh even hand planed the 2" thick by 12" wide railing tops). We do love the outdoor covered area and would hate to give it up. Rains here a lot; covered space is good. I think I'll just enjoy it as is....See MoreCarly Schaaf
