Sniping on eBay
Comments (29)No, Nick, sadly not all people check what things are worth before bidding. I had lost a particular Encyclia species a few years ago and was looking for another to replace it. Not overly rare or anything, but not always easy to find. The dealer/seller put one up on eBay for $15, a very nice plant, which was what they sold it for at their orchid website. So I bid $15, it wasn't important where I bought it from them. Next thing you know, the bids are flying in. Once it went over $17, I went to the website and bought one that same day for the $15. The frenzy continued and the eBay plant ended up selling for -- I think it was about $60 or more. If my memory is correct, a second one they posted up afterward also sold for big bucks. A lesson I learned long ago: always check the price and availability at online websites before bidding on anything, even a toaster....See Morebidding on e-bay
Comments (9)Mavia, I love ebay--I used it as a primary resource in purchasing stuff for my remodel and the contractor started calling me "Little Miss Ebay." It takes a few transactions to get a good feel for how to work it, but don't be intimidated by it. When you are bidding, you start with whatever the opening bid is unless there is competetion for the item. On Ebay the price an item will sell for is determined by who wants it--or who wants it most. If I'm bidding on something that I don't absolutely have to have. I set my maximum bid at the best price I'd consider paying for the item, and then I just let the auction play out. On the other hand, when bidding on more unique items, where there may be more competition, I will watch the auction and try something like the "sniping" approach. Whatever you do, be sure to know what you're getting before you bid. Buy from Sellers who have good feedback ratings, and make sure to factor in the shipping cost. (Some sellers sell cheap and gouge you on the shipping to avoid paying their ebay fees.) Since the Kitchen Forum isn't really the best place to discuss how-to-bid-on-Ebay, feel free to e-mail me if you have any other questions that you need help with....See Morefoyer light and ebay question and pics....
Comments (9)I buy and sell on ebay. Personally, I wouldn't pay his price to end the action early, because I've gotten amazing deals just following the auction till the end. There are always 'sleepers' that people just aren't watching or paying attention to, and you can get a really great deal. He might have had that listed multiple times and not even sold it, so your opening bid might win it. As a seller he has access to information telling him how many people are watching that auction. If it were a ton of people, he would let the auction play out and hope to make a lot of money. He probably hasn't had a lot of interest and he's probably hoping you'll pay double just so he makes money and doesn't have to pay ebay fees. My advice, wait it out. And keep looking for others while you're waiting on this one to end! Oh btw, you said you didn't see an option for 'completed'. You have to be signed in as a member to see that....See MoreeBay bid retraction
Comments (7)When I retract all bids, which I have only had to do once, I always send a message to all bidders, explaining why. In my case, the plant died due to being knocked over and exposed to full sun all day while I was at work....See MoreOlychick
