Our Calacatta floor tiles - Is the veining too busy?
Comments (7)Thank you for all the responses, I feel so much better! I wasn't sure if the floor would end up looking too busy. Our vanity will be stained a medium brown, so perhaps it makes it a unique focal point and therefore the marble on the counter is okay if it's softer than the tile on the floors. The people we bought the tiles from actually sorted our floor tiles from the lot, to keep them as consistent to each other as possible. They had shown me other lots of Calacatta and they varied just as Bill and others had described. They had one lot with the softer veining, but unfortunately didn't have enough for our master bathroom. Marlene - I love your bathroom and you have a beautiful, peaceful marble on your counter, so I'm happy to know that you also like the busier veining on some of your tiles. Zeebee - please post pics when you get your samples. I'd love to see them!! I'm so happy that we've been able to incorporate Calacatta in our home as I've loved seeing it in others' kitchens. I'm super happy with our Bianco Antico kitchen counters, but Calacatta had an allure that I just could not ignore. Here is the layout of our master bath. The 18x18 Calacatta floor tiles will be on the floor, while the 5/8x5/8 mosaics will border an area on the floor, and go on the shower floor. The bathroom walls will have a half wall of subway tile, and the subway tiles are carried over into the shower walls and ceiling. The slab of course, will go on the vanity counter, as well as the marble jambs and thresholds....See MoreI'd like a light-veined, non-busy marble subway tile (?)
Comments (6)pbear - Do you have pictures of your counter top? I was so unsure of going with the lighter granite, but thought that everyone, my sister, sister-in-law and friends all have the darker granite. We wanted to be different and thought to go light, so my DH chose the bianco romano. I loved it! I bought the samples of backsplash from glasstilestore.com. They come in 6x6 sample sizes, which is nice so you can get a better idea. I think I bought 10 samples, because I'm so unsure of what style I'm trying to go for, definitely modern. Theresse - are you talking about the plain white subway tile pictured with the red glass and granite. I love that as well... love it more because its .29 cents a tile!!! but thought maybe it was too plain, which is why I started looking at other choices, but everyone is telling me to go simple with the plain subway tile. I wanted some color and considered the red mosaic as a border somewhere in the middle, or thinking of just going over the range similar to this posting... oh and check out the border right above the granite. I love it. http://www.starpoohonline.com/photos/stiles2.jpg I added my link I added the design of our new kitchen. I'm looking for a gray slate tile for the floor, but haven't found what I'm looking for. I'm looking to have different size tiles that flow right into the sun room. If you look at the old kitchen and see where my fridge is there aren't any cabinets.... if you look at the new design I added a wall of cabinets surrounding the fridge. I'm so excited to have so many cabinets and the new countertop that extends into the sunroom. What do you think of my design? http://s919.photobucket.com/albums/ad40/rufinorox/Kitchen%20Before%20Pictures/ Here is a link that might be useful: kitchen design...See MoreCounters and Island Too Matchy or Too Busy?
Comments (2)I personally don't think there is a right or wrong way to go. I like the contrast look, but I didn't do it (primarily because of the size of my kitchen and the size of my island). In my case, my perimeter cabs are off-white and my island is brandy with black accent. I went with verde butterfly everywhere (it's very dark) because my island is pretty large in relation to the kitchen and I did think it would look busy. IF my island had been much smaller OR I had a huge kitchen, I probably would have done contrasting counters. Now that they are in, I am very happy I chose to match them. It was the right call in my space. GOOD LUCK!...See MorePot filler w/ this backsplash too busy? Slab or tile backsplash?
Comments (9)Hi Katie, Demo starts tomorrow, so no pics on progress yet, but I'll post when I have some. I'm working a little bit with a KD, and doing the rest myself with cabinetmaker. KD suggested open shelving like in the inspiration pic (but in stainless, specifically). I think it would stress me out though, lol! Having all of my bottles and stuff right out there (the range area is the focal point to basically my whole downstairs living area). My pantry rarely looks fabulous, and I'd be moving the pantry out into the open. So, I think we'll be making the vertical column things on either side of the mantel style range area into pull-out shelves for sheet pans, spices, small bottles, etc. I considered the open shelving with a pretty display of white bowls and dishes, but then I'd lose the storage space for the stuff I really need at my fingertips. Feel free to email me, too, if you want to exchange more ideas. It's a fun process!...See MorePaul f
