Beverly, not sure what you mean? i used it on our walk out basement reno ( with a lot less natural wood admittedly) and Grecian Ivory walls and loved it. Not trying to match the post and beam colors and i think a whiter trim would be too harsh. i didn’t mention the kitchen will have some warm white cabinets so trying to be consistant throughout the house. i actually have Pure White in another home with agreeable gray and other colors and i like it there, but a more current contemporary home, not a mountain home. i had a couple people suggest an even warmer trim but my eye doesn’t see that either. The wall color is what is difficult for me.

The wall color is usually selected last, after you've selected your furnishings--rugs, upholstery, etc. What else are you doing in the home, what type of furniture do you have?

I love this color with wood I sometimes use the same color but cut up to 25% in different spaces.I agree a nice white not Alabaster but do the same trim color as the cabinets IMO . This house needs to have all the same lighting everywhere to keep colors true and IMO that means all LED 4000K .I do agree choosing wall color is often best left for last but the color I posted I find is cso neutral it works when my clients need to pick a color before the walk through on a new house .

Refinish the floors first. Otherwise you run the risk of painting twice. I too have a living room with a large south facing window and tried at least five colors before deciding. I don't know if my choice would work for you (BM Pale Oak) but I will pass along some things I learned while sampling. Any small amount of yellow in a paint color in a room with a lot of south light will look much more yellow. Alabaster might look more yellow than you're used to. Now that we're almost at the shortest day of the year the light is at the lowest angle all year, so if anything you try looks yellow now it will be more yellow in the summer. Of course if you like yellow, there's nothing wrong with that.

You can use gray in a room like this and the light will warm it up. You don't want a cool gray since you have warm colors elsewhere, but you may want to look at the fireplace stone for clues. I agree that the green in the room now is not good, but if you like green there are other more subtle versions you might like. SW Moorstone or Soft Sage are popular green-grays. As with any painting project, sampling is very important. I always end with buying a quart of what I think I've decided on and painting at least ten square feet on every wall. I have changed my mind at that point. Small samples sometimes don't do the job.

Nope. Up here in the north, because the sun is low in the sky through the late fall and winter months, there is abundant direct light in south-facing rooms, but in the summer there is light but no direct light; south wall will never have direct light (unless other exposure comes into play). That direct light is what makes all the difference in warming up the paint colors. I learned this the hard way. I chose my paint color over the winter, with the sun directly hitting the walls it was what I though was the perfect color. Fast forward to spring when it was painted -- sun now higher in the sky, no direct light to warm up the color and I hated it, was a depressing, greyed-out color, dragged me down every time I looked at it all spring and summer. Now that we're back to the time of year where the sun is low, I'm fine with it. Guests even commented on the color difference, they thought I repainted.

Thank you all for the input!! I think you can tell I am color challenged.

First you are very correct about the light difference in Summer vs Winter in North Carolina. We are usually only there in the summer (May 1-Nov 1) so I see a much different lighting when living there than what I was working with this past week. The original pictures I posted were taken just a few days ago (Dec 1) as we were there to move out all the furniture from the main floor. I had to deep dive to find some pictures that were taken in the summer (June a few years ago, probably after 3pm) and have attached for a different perspective. But I looked at colors while there and Alabaster was okay in my eyes, even in the winter sun. (Just noticed that there was an Alabaster sample stuck to a window trim piece in one of the pictures LOL). It also is very close to the kitchen cabinet color so I think I'm okay there.

Yes the warm white cabinets (Kraftmaid warm white) go yellow for an hour or so especially this time of year when the low sun sets as the Kitchen is on the west side of the house. But the rest of the day I like them and I'm hoping in the summer, because the sun is higher and almost never shines directly into the kitchen, it will be okay. If I go with a whiter white I'm afraid they would look cold and contemporary most of the time, sort of out of place for a mountain home.

My schedule of work is unconventional for some complicated reasons so the painting of the large areas (foyer, living room and dinning room) will be done before any floor changes are made. Don't like it but that is the way it will be. I am getting a pass on the kitchen and bathroom to wait until the end. So I was looking for a wall color that will go well with my unusual post and beam color and hoping I will be able to follow with the floors and not mess it up.

I came up with Accessible Beige because it seems to go with just about everything but didn't reflect yellow. And the Austere Gray because it is a nod to the previous green but not in your face because of its gray. I felt that both would not blind me when the sun is shining through the huge windows. I just may have to choose and hope I can work with what I got. I did that for 10 years with the current green. I prefer the Beige as I would like to sort of blend the wood and not make it a statement. My husband want's to "show them off" so I was thinking the accessible gray would to that and still not drive me crazy. I'm not a fan of blue for some reason. It is a rabbit hole and I am not adventurous with color nor good a picking it out, as you see. I won't go into the textured walls in the foyer and the tile there too! the budget is what it is.

If you want to go down a deeper rabbit hole, I have included a couple of pictures for my choices in the kitchen. Changing out the tile to the wood (which hopefully will be the same throughout the house), and trying to decide on a wood island or a Kraftmaid Bonzai island. Alabaster and a couple of wall color options shown too.

I think a gray would work for the walls. Maybe you can paint the damage trim a color that mimicks the wood, which is gorgeous.

I pulled a color from the stone of the fireplace, but it might be off. I would get a cabinet for storage and lower the TV so it is eye level when sitting.

I agree to pass on the SW Alabaster, very yellow almost green undertones. I would not redo the floors and bring in yet another wood tone, they're gorgeous.

Paint everything a soft bright white, walls and trim. We did in our cabin (very much like yours) and the white is great with all the pine paneling, trim and high ceilings. Very calming.

A simple palette draws the eye to the view out the window, not to the wall color. That's what we found. When we moved in the walls were gold in the living room and blue in the bedroom, too distracting from the beautiful wood.

When the sun hits those white walls and wood from our tall windows, wow.

We chose Kelly Moore Swiss Coffee 23. LRV 86. No noticable undertones.

Definitely paint over that textured paint effect in the entry. The detail should be the architecture. Simplify. That's why the white works I guess.

Tracefloyd, i have to laugh. when i posted the pictures i knew someone would say they like the floors. The pictures make them look much nicer than they are. They are ready for a refinish. Even if i do a clear finish once they are sanded they would look better although i prefer a darker stained floor. Actually this is true for the whole place, it needs some updating.

Painting the trim is important to me. in real life the trim around the windows are stained and dirty and really can’t be cleaned. it will also make future touch ups easier when water intrusion happens, which it will. i have a hard time wrapping my mind around a trim like sw pure white (which i have in my other home paired with agreeable gray) and white walls on top of that. but that does bring me back to the accessible beige which might be closer to what you are suggesting.

Of course if i change the trim to Pure White then i have to change the kitchen cabinets to white🤪 which i swore i would not do. Or do the bonsai and risk out dating it before it is done. But originally that is what i thought i wanted🤨. have to make decisions by Tuesday as cabinets need to be ordered.

i was asked why we bought the house if i want to change it so much…the view is wonderful.

why not a white tone for the walls?

I don't think alabaster is the right "white" for the trim...it's too yellow and too bright to work with the natural wood.

We owned a Maine Post and Beam home with "pickled" beams. I found that using a warmer white, more beige than yellow, for walls and trim let the wood be the standout. I did what little painted trim there was in a semi-gloss and the same color on the walls in a pearl finish.

I'd leave the floors as is. Love the monochromatic background which will let you choose rugs and fabrics with more warmth.

Oops I didn't mean pure bright white when I said a soft bright white. I knew I should have said off-white lol. I dislike pure bright white. That's why I mentioned the LRV in the 80's...soft. LRV paint in the 90's is way too bright. Alabaster is 82 but still a white. Find something more neutral and less yellow.

Please don't get something that is "very close" in color. They will always look off next to each other. Those white cabs are beautiful. Get something that compliments instead. I'm kinda surprised you're considering even more wood in this house for the island and floors.

Anyway decide on paint color after they go in. And use the same color for walls and trim. Simplify...did I say that already? All that wood is actually very busy. Can I stress enough that off-white is not modern in our cabin? With the wood it feels more monastic.

People asked why you bought this house....Seriously?? Dumb question. We bid on our cabin but hated the wall color...that's a reason to pass on it? But now they all love the view and sun deck. "Wow, just like a ski chalet they say". No kidding?

@elcieg What was the warmer white you used that was not yellow? That's hard to find. Took us forever to find an off white that was not yellow.

The list of off-whites which do not show yellow goes on and on. The one I used in my post and beam house was B.M. Atrium White...lovely warm color...no yellow.

I've used Atrium White in the past, and it has a pinkish cast to it. Many off-whites are tints of yellow, which gives them their warm quality. All whites have some color in them, so you need to select one that has a blue, green, red, orange or purple tint, if you don't like yellow.

I am guessing that you've already chosen your paint color but we just repainted our timberframe great room a Sherwin Williams Relaxed Khaki and love it! We like the warm olive green undertones that fit well with our oak beams and leather furniture. I even like the color in various light - bright day, overcast day, and dark evening. Can you post your final choice once made?

Edited to add that we do have SW Alabaster in our upstairs hallway that is open to our great room.

What did you end up doing? We bought a timber frame a year ago that was the same green as yours inside. Greens and harvest gold everywhere. I painted the walls Benjamin Moore Steam and we love it! Completely brightened the home but it’s not a paper white. It has some warmth and the beams in our house totally pop now. Dark rooms are beautiful and moody but I feel so much more energy from the space now. Would love to see what you chose.
