Bathroom Reno - Not sure what to do!

This is a bathroom for teens. We decided to reno it because the previous contractors did a horrible job. We found mold so we had to gut everything. The only thing we’re keeping is the backsplash behind the mirrors.

What flooring and shower tile would work well with this backsplash?? I’m having a tough time finding something that will go with it.

My husband wants to keep it because he spent a lot on it.

That does look bad. I'm sorry that happened to you. If you have leftover pieces of the backsplash tile, take them to a tile store (better than a big box store if there is one within driving distance of you). Look for a solid color tile the same color as one of the backsplash pieces and do both the floor and shower in 12" X 24" tile. The shower floor can be a smaller format as usually that works better with a drain. That way the backsplash is the star. Probably a white vanity will work. Gray is not as popular anymore, but that's an option if you like it. It might be harder to find one in the right shade of gray than it is to find a white one that will work.

Is the shower tile also going to be demolished? So you are down to bare studs? I would go with pure white tile everywhere. Large scale white in the shower. Small on the shower floor. Keep it simple. Modern. Nothing with any movement. A white vanity. White fixtures. Classic.

thanks Bill! If, however, our goal is to avoid problems (mold, mildew, water damage) 10 - 15 yrs down the line, should we change out the tub surround (yes, I'm going to presume you'll say) AND the floor? Or, can we seal the grout and call it a day on the floor? Many many years ago, I remember seeing a mushroom grow up between the wall and the floor, in a bathroom, of a place that I was living in. Guess that there was a wee bit of water leaking out of the shower!

I do like the countertop choice. But I am also a fan of a less busy quartz countertop like this one. Still has the subtle veins in it, but it's not too busy for a bathroom. Plus I love the idea of a white vanity popping against the navy color the room. The sample in your photo could take away from the "pop" factor in my opinion. But I do think your sample is a beautiful piece of stone for sure. Good luck with your renovation!

@Cherie I've definitely had that thought, but I feel that the longer we wait to do this project the harder it gets to deciding what we want. I've found that the more I think about this project the more unsure I've become really. This post was as close to we got to feeling like things were set to go...but given how this thread is going maybe taking extra time is the way to go @kariyava i actually love that all sand look...I showed it to my partner and we are considering using the sand britstone we chose with nickel fixtures just like it. but I think the stone we chose might a bit darker than the photo...might have to rethink the tile. As much as i like it I do worry that with double shower heads the bathroom might look a little crowded , and I'm not sure the spacious look would translate as well in a smaller bathroom with 8 ft ceilings

I'll be a contrarian. I would never knowingly rent a room with a shared bathroom in the hall. That would be a complete pass - I don't even like having to use a hallway bathroom in a sleeping situation in which I would share with friends and family because if I need to use it in the night I would have to wake up more/get more decently dressed and I hate having to shlep stuff to take a shower or perform normal grooming stuff in a bathroom. I don't have the horror of viewing a toilet from a bedroom that some houzzers seem to have. It certainly wouldn't bother me on a temporary basis. I have a master bath in my home and I can't remember the last time I actually shut the door. I don't have issues with smells or humidity but perhaps that is because my Toto washlet has a built in deodorizer AND I have an excellent Panasonic fan which runs based on ambient humidity levels. I don't generally even have condensation on shower doors or mirrors after exiting let along huge amounts of humidity wafting through my bedroom. The question really is one of economics. There is a cost to installing the bathroom and OP would need to decide whether they would make up the expense by having increased rent and/or renting it out more frequently. Certainly any prospective renter would see a picture and determine whether they wanted the ensuite with a curtain in the room or use of a bathroom in the hall. Also resale value is a red herring. At such point that OP wanted to sell it would be relatively inexpensive to convert the bathroom into a closet if having the ensuite in that room was a negative.

Thanks! The shower tile will be demoed as well because of mold. Everything but the gray backsplash behind the sink will be demolished.

There is so many directions you can go with this. You def need to get to a tile store. The tile you had in the previous shower looks to be a large format porcelain - on my monitor, it has a creamier background. You would need to get a bright white background or maybe do a cool concrete look. You could do the walls and the floors the same tile so the deco tile behind the mirrors will be the focus.

I like 12 x24 plain colored porcealin tile for both bathroom floors and shower walls and for sure in this case since anything else will not work with the backsplash
