Hi Trina. I'm not a chemist, but I did real well in college in my chem courses, so I have a basic understanding of what's going on. Much of what I'm about to suggest is also based on ideas that were inspired by the book "Teaming with Microbes: The Organic Gardener's Guide to the Soil Food Web" by Lowenfels and Lewis. Can you smell chlorine when you're in that area? Chlorine will dissipate into the air when it gets a chance. I would advise against trying to 'add something to the soil' to try to rid the chlorine. Turning the soil should rid the top layer of the chlorine. But the longer lasting effects are what you'll have to deal with. The biosphere has been killed off and needs to be reestablished. Obviously, the chlorine is antibiotic, so it has killed off various types of life in the soil; bacterial, protozoa, micro-arthropods, worms, more. Turn the soil or aerate the soil somehow to help disperse the chlorine. Letting the soil dry out will help let air get into the soil. Likewise, when the soil is dry, giving it a good watering will cause the air in soil to leave and allow new air in as the water drains into the soil. This is per Lowenfels and Lewis. Add compost and/or organic lawn food. You're trying to feed bacteria. You might want to scatter some soil from a healthy part of the yard after you've applied organic materials. The 'healthy' soil will inoculate the damaged soil with more bacteria, protozoa, micro-arthropods. Mulch and compost will continue to reestablish the life in the soil.

Interim progress report: We cleaned out the garage and crawl space of all the essentially worthless things we stored there that we could not bring ourselves to part with. (Wife got upset with me for giving away a precious teapot and a few other things -- I confess I did blunder a bit in the rush to clear out the place.) The remediation consisted of a thorough cleaning of all horizontal surfaces in the garage and the interior living space. And, in the crawl space, removal of visible mold in the area under the kitchen affected by the slow plumbing leak, and unclogging of the vent under the kitchen (to improve air flow) and replacing heavy plastic vapor barrier and replacing under the floor insulation in that area. In the living space, 2 big airscrubbers were run continuously for 3 days and nights, pumping air through a HEPA filter out a window and through a plastic tube about 15 feet long into the open air a good distance from the house. The car that we store in the garage, also affected by the mold, was treated for a few hours with a machine that generates ozone, probably at toxic levels (!!), but I drove it with the windows open to dissipate the smell. We also had the HVAC system cleaned out and sanitized. The post remediation testing in the garage and in the kitchen came out clean. But the one in the master bedroom showed a 50% reduction in mold spores, but the level was still unacceptably high. The mold inspector recommended that we get rid of the carpeting in the bedroom. but when I told him that it was practically new, less than a year old, he changed his mind and said it was probably not the carpet. We went ahead and had the airscrubber in again for another 3 days and nights, and had the HVAC registers in the bedroom and masterbath revacuumed and treated again with sanitizer. And we'll have the mold inspector back next week to retest the bedroom. I'm hoping that the test result will come out clean. At this point we are down about $3K for this thing. To say nothing about the worry and discomfort of living with the noisy airscrubbers. Not nice.

My understanding of this Menu recall is that some customers had reported issues - and the food in question (unkown) was not one that contained wheat gluten. Because they have no way of knowing if other foods are OK or not, and probably because they were so highly criticized for their handling of the initial recall, all foods with possible cross contamination were recalled. However, even with FDA now finally admitting deaths are in the thousands, I would rather play safe and have my pet tested if a food was recalled.

That's pretty scary..Dry Milk is in a ton of stuff. I'm so glad that I've moved to very little processed/packaged food in my house!
