Yes, let's compare. Mine will have a little more shade than full sun because it will be at the back of a deep bed behind other roses, but the general area does get fillfull sun all day. It's definitely too much sun for the hydrangea that's getting out.... poor thing sunburnt every year .

Fantastic! I would love to hear how it compares in blooms and disease resistance. It will be hard to beat RTC on blooming power and being thornless with good disease resistance. Scent or lack of is her only weakness.

I can’t believe Palatine still has Black Caviar and La Fontaine aux Perle. Those are two amazing roses from them that are hard to find elsewhere so i thought for sure they’d go quickly

I thought their rule was they’d combine another order (minimum 3 roses) for just $7.50. So you would be paying very minimal additional shipping, if any, depending on total number of roses. You just need to come up with at least 3 more roses, you can’t just add one to your order, then the additional shipping/handling might be less than the cost of a Big Mac meal. Oh, I am evil when it comes to enabling.

I noticed that Palatine has Blue for You, which is near the top of my wish list! Would I be foolish to try to grow this rose on multiflora in SoCal? Would I be better off waiting for it to come back in stock as an own root at Heirloom? Waiting is hard, but I’ve heard that mutlflora might not appreciate my heat and alkaline soil?

Hmmm....I'm certainly no expert but I would go for it. I ordered her for my very wet in spring/fall, very hot and dry in summer heavy clay soil. I amend when planting to the best of my ability/knowledge and then hope for the best. I have often been surprised by the outcome of planting some that were highly rated but fizzled in my garden and others that were supposed duds but I ended up loving. I saw Blue for You for the first time in a friend's garden and was blown away by the beauty and vigor of this rose. She is unique and lovely and you deserve her!

Hot and dry here in the high desert, and we have alkaline soil. I have roses grafted on multiflora and they do just fine. I have them on Dr Huey, too, and it's hard to tell the difference. Diane

That is my experience too, Diane. Multiflora does as well as own root and Dr. Huey here. We are very dry. It surprised me after what I read. I am more neutral ph here at 7.

Blue for you is one of my favorite roses. It has been healthy and bloomy. The color is so beautiful

Desert Rose I have both Rose mantic Fuchsia and La Fontaine aux Peele'sPerles (Houzz is at it again...) And they're great. I think they're both in stock. So is Black Caviar which I've heard great things about.... It's on the order I placed last week.

I live in coastal So. Calif. with very alkaline soil and water, and every rose I've grown on multiflora here has done great. I have several on multiflora that are >20 years old. The only caveat on my recommendation is that I don't have screaming hot summers. Desert Rose, so sad you missed out on Blue For You :-(

I lived in Texas with extremely alkaline soil, hard water , dense sticky clay and blazing hot sun, and I had plenty of roses on multiflora that did great. So did fortuniana, Dr Huey, and own-root…same experience as DIane and Sheila. I think some of the discussion about how each type of rose has to have it’s own tailored soil condition is more than a bit over exaggerated.

i’m sorry you missed out on Blue for You, Desert Rose but something to look forward to next year (or perhaps from Heirloom?)

Thanks, Ben! Your Blue for You is also stunning. I love how round and compact both yours and Kristine’s are. The ones at the Huntington Gardens are more tall and upright, but still have a nice growth habit.

I think that it is on help me find that says that Blue for you will be 5 ft. Tall. I have had mine for 5 years and it is never gotten more than about 2 1/2 ft.

I am surprised that it is so hard to find . When I got mine every one was selling it. I guess that with so many roses it's hard to stock them all.

BenT, I totally agree with you - one should not need a degree in chemistry or biology or botany or horticulture in order to grow wonderful roses. I have neither the patience nor the time. I recently bought a new book by Michael Marriott called "Roses" that is full of great sensible information, beautiful photos and planting advice, even though he is in England, still of universal value.

Blue for You is gorgeous and I think it would fit in well with old rose varieties, which I'm primarily interested in. I'm glad that many of the modern rose have that habit, which the older hybrid teas and floribundas that were all the rage fifty years ago most often did not.

Desert Rose, I'm sorry that Blue for You is sold out again. It was available until midnight eastern time last night. I was hoping you would get it so I can buy it along with Aubade and Our Anniversary (I was looking for a sign since I exceeded my planned order this year, 20 roses from various vendors vs. planed 9 from Palatine).

For the last few days, some of the hot ones (Augusta Louise, Pianos, Blue Girl, the Pride) came back in stock, but they didn't last long, 15-30 minutes max. I don't know if it's worth your time to check Palatine's inventory from time to time. I hope you get it either from Heirloom or next year from Palatine.

Rose Padawan: Thank you for the tip! I will definitely keep an eye on Palatine’s website. In the meantime, if you happen to spot Blue for You again first, please buy it for yourself since you’re also wanting it! These roses are jumping into other people’s carts too quickly to wait for a sign, and there’s always room for one more rose. ;)

Thank you for the reassurance on La Fontaine. I'm wondering how well it will hold it's head up. The blooms look gigantic. I have Anastasia and am very pleased with it's disease resistance and performance.

@rosecanadian Thank you for the assurance! I read Ben's post somewhere on a fragrance that and it stated that I absolutely must have it. I'm a fragrance nut as I know you love fragrance too, so I'm so happy to try this rose and that we can share nose notes :0) notice how the emoji has a big sniffer haha! And it's so nice to have a rose with fragrance you can count on. We really do work ourselves up before we take a deep wiff don't we?

Does anyone have experience with Gloire de Guilan? I'm thrilled to try it just to smell a few blooms, but I'm concerned she will probably wither away in my no spray, hot and humid garden. Tell me to have hope yes?? And by wither away, I mean turn into a HOT BS MESS!

Sunny, La Fontaine was new in my garden last year and she did just fine holding up the big blooms. No nodding at all.

Sunny my Black Caviar only gets morning sun so I would for sure think it would need some shade at your house.

I wanted to share the happy conclusion of my Blue for You quest. On a whim, I asked the Huntington rose garden volunteers if they would have this rose at their plant sale. They recommended that I email my question to Tom Carruth. He replied that the Huntington would not have it at their plant sales in the foreseeable future. And then a few days later, he was gracious enough to email me again to let me know that he had spotted Blue for You for sale at the local farmer’s market. I went there bright and early on Saturday morning, and lo and behold, there it was! I meant to only buy one, but ended up buying two. I’m still marveling at my good fortune. So now I have Tom Carruth to thank not only for the beautiful roses that he’s bred, but also for this hard-to-find rose that he didn’t breed. Is this a Hollywood ending … or a Pasadena one?
