Noticing there are a lot of white/off-white wall these days...
Comments (23)When we moved into our house it was almost all white because the elderly p.o.s probably paid someone to whitewash it to sell. They painted over bad sheetrock and wallpaper. It looked ok at first glance, but one of the best parts of doing the reno was to finally have some color. If a house is white for a scheme, it comes off better than if it is white because it is easier to paint the walls and trim the same color. You can tell the difference. I think if you want a light neutral and don't want the creams and beiges that have been very popular, I'd try a pale yellow. It looks great with wood floors and antiques and mixes well with a full range of decors. We painted an apartment in our first house and even though we had male tenants over the years, they all commented on loving it. It works best if the trim is a pure white to have some contrast. It gives you color without hitting anyone over the head if you go very light toned. I have used it when recommending to builders and flippers what to paint for the main rooms because it is cheery and subtle. Blues come in and out of fashion and beige and cafe au lait have been big for a while, so will be on the way out soon. Greens can be hard to coordinate if you want flexibility (although I love a nice green). Pink and peach take real commitment, and a thick skin if used outside of a child's room, and a pale lavender is also one that can limit the materials used with it (no maroon or reds work well with it, IMHO). White can actually be harder to match because of the many tones to white. When I used a pale yellow in my house, I made sure that nothing of any significance in the room was yellow, so there'd be no clashing. It worked as a back drop for the stronger colors of the antique furniture or white wts. It is the prettiest color to put alongside oak floors, to me....See MoreCoordinating fabrics for the bath (off the bedroom)
Comments (17)Oakley - Yeah, I need some florals somewhere! I wish I had a powder room. I'd use some fun wallpaper in there. Shannon - The brown in houndstooth fabric is a dark black/brown. The floral is a rich, dark brown. I held both against my deep brown (SW Woodsy Brown) stairs last night they looked really good with it. Here's a shot of the brown on my stairs. Tina - Neither one of the fabrics are heavy actually. The small houndstooth is much thiner than the larger houndstooth pattern that I'm using for the pillows and bedskirt. The floral is thin but a weird texture though. Kind of nubby feeling on the back. My other shower curtain in the green bathroom is pretty heavy. The main curtain part is pretty thick. The colors look nicer together IRL, btw. The wheat base gets washed out or something in photos. Southernfrenchie- The towels are actually navy in the pictures. They don't really go super with the current floral valance but it's towels we have for now. Tina & Southenfrenchie - They're saying they don't have that paisley in the inspiration photos anymore. That it's been discontinued. They sent a differnet one that looks nice. (see below) I'm sure I could find another one cheaper somewhere else. A few posters said they thought the paisley int he book was Waverly paddock shaw but looking closer I think it's similar but not as much red. Anyhow, where do you guys think I should add the paisley? After I totaled up my shower curtain fabric cost and added it to my total cost I about fell over last night. I'm concerned if I don't order the fabric right now they'll be out later. I saw the floral was discontinued on some sites. I was thinking of using a different fabric for the base since I'll need a lot, to try and save some cost but this is probably one of those things if I don't do it the way I truly want, I won't be 100% happy with it later. If I do the shower curtain and window valance right now I'll have to wait to paint, new curtains for the bedroom, and bamboo blind. (Don't know that I would've been able to do "all" those other things either. Maybe would've been just the curtains and blind.) I also don't have a bedspread to use with the new pillows. I held it up to my tan vellux this morning just for colors ideas and it looked very nice. Going to get a tan coverlet or whatever you want to call the main blanket. Then I was thinking to myself this morning...maybe I can use some of the leftover fabric for mats in art. Just saw that on the Holly Mathis blog yesterday, Tina. My wheels are spinning. :) I'm feeling very chatty this morning. :)...See MoreHelp! White or off white Diamond cabinets for 1915 house?
Comments (13)I have off-white and although I love it now, it was a NIGHTMARE to get it to look half decent. Instead of gray undertones, mine have PINK. You would never know it now but I had to go through 3 wall colors, going darker and darker to make the off-white appear whiter. I had to forget the white subway backsplash I'd planned and get something that wasn't so bright white. Then, I had to paint all the trim in the room off-white because having too much bright white in the room, made the cabinets look pink or dingy, depending on the lighting. I'm not trying to discourage you, because it is a nice look.... It's not impossible to pull off, just takes some extra coordination. My carpenter is going with off-white and he witnessed the whole debacle. He said he loves it! Thankfully, my kitchen is closed off to the rest of the rooms, 2 doorways and a pass through window. The rest of the house still has white trim. Despite everything, again, I love my new kitchen. I even noticed that I prefer my brighter white ceramic utensil caddies and vases in the room now. I thought I was doomed to off-white everything forever. Here's the result, not finished yet but not dingy!...See MoreCreamy white cabinets - how to coordinate wall color and ceiling color
Comments (4)I'm not a color expert, but I have 2 kitchens each with different shades of white painted cabinets, so I'll offer thoughts based on my experience. For our lake build I wanted a crisp white cottage look that would complement the blue stained island. I was planning on going with the whitest white option. My KD convinced me, as yours did, not to go with stark white. Like you, I was worried it would read creamy, but I'm glad I followed her advice. The cabs positively read clean white in the room. We did go with the stark white with the bathroom vanity and, as she had said, it lacks the richness and depth that the kitchen ones do and looks less like wood and more like a builder grade cab. We did go with a warmer shade on the walls in the open area of the kitchen and I think that helps them stand out as being more white. I wanted a completely different feel in my home and chose creamy cabinets. In both homes I have standard white ceiling paint. This is where the color experts may advise differently, but to my eye it works just fine in both spaces because the ceiling & cabs are on different planes & with the play of shadow & light the whites don't seem to fight in either case. Hope this helps as you sort it out....See MoreJAN MOYER
