How to modernize a kitchen with Santa Cecília counter top granite

Budget! I’m stuck with my Santa Cecília counter top granite, and white tile floor. There goes my dream kitchen! I’ve been trying to get away from the beige and alike warm tones, but how can I make this work? We are building an island, and I had hoped for a navy blue cabinet on the island with while cabinets for the rest of the kitchen. That was when I was going to change the countertop. I’m opened for ideas. Would my island look good with a black granite, or butcher counter top? What color could I paint the island cabinet? How to tie this all together with a white tile floor?

Could you explain further your "building an island"? You have an island there already. If you replace it with an island that looks completely different from the rest of the kitchen, it could look incongruous and not fitting in. It's hard to say without knowing more what you meant, Also, you said you don't have much of a budget, but islands are expensive due to the amount of cabinetry plus the electrical required.

I am also not clear whether you are changing your cabinets or not, or if you are, what you are doing with them. Refacing? Painting? Replacing?

I actually think your kitchen looks fine as is. But to help you, please explain further what you are doing in your kitchen with the cabinets.

1) Collect inspiration photos.

2) Consider less expensive improvements such as: adding cabinet hardware,

painting the floor grout lines to reduce contrast,

painting the backsplash a lighter color,

or adding a colorful runner:

First I am not a fabricator but have over 30 years experience as a home builder. A couple of comments on Granite. First in this forum like many granite is talked discussed as if it is a commodity - all granite tops are created equal. Granite is not like salt or soy beans. There are many grades of granite and the prices vary widely many with similar or even the same names. There are also many levels of fabricator from the sophisticated fabricator using computer operated cutting and polishing machines to the guy who will literally cut granite in your back yard. I was at a "shop" the other day where they were cutting granite with a hand saw on 2x4's in the parking lot. Many new fabricators were working for someone else and when the economy slowed they were laid off. These employees then went into business for themselves often without proper financing or even proper tools. The prices fell as these fabricators using lawn signs to advertise and working for wages and cutting corners: waxing edges instead of polishing, using mismatched remnants, dyeing granite to make it look more expensive, cheap uncertified give away sinks, and other tricks that do not show up until the check clears. Radon is pretty much a non issue but check it if you like. Do not buy from a fabricator unless you have seen the shop and the equipment they are using. If they have their own slab inventory it is a good sign that they are better off financially. Reverse look up the phone number. If it comes up a cell phone and they fabricator does not have an office look out. Many of these guys change numbers often to avoid warranty. Yes all granite should be sealed. Darker granite will hide the absorbed water but still needs to be sealed. Quartz, solid surface materials and even the composite sold by Granite Transformation have advantages and disadvantages. First they are more uniform because they are manufactured product. The is no such thing as a B or C grade quartz. These product do not have the veining and character as granite. I would advise you avoid doing business with AZ tile and Dean Jessup specifically. We had a horrible experience with them. Don't expect them to act with integrity or stand behind their product. We used a fabricator that was a personal referral from him. When we had discoloration and fingerprints that wouldn't come off of our Della Terra quartz he informed me I must have "scarred" it by cleaning with a paper towel. ( I called him within an hour of the fabricator leaving). We paid beyond stone to buff it with a cleaner at their recommendation. It mostly resolved the issue although as a result of the buffing the gloss and sheen no longer match our perimeter counters. Best we can figure out the fabricator applied turtle wax or something similar to disguise striations around the sink cutout. Which is why fingerprints couldn't be cleaned off. We still have some smudges. Bottom line rather than try to help us resolve the issue he was hostile and accusatory. He said the fabricator (a friend of his apparently) said it was fine so we must have done something. Do business with them at your own risk.

I LOVE your counters - I considered a Blue Australe which seems similar to laboradite, but it was almost twice the price, at the time, of what I ended up choosing, Volga Blue. (very hard capturing either of these stones in a picture, isn't it) So I understand your challenge, I spent a long time puzzled over a backsplash for my counters. I went with the Seneca Tile company's Blue Lagoon from the Studio line. My counter reads black and hints of silver at first glance, the blue inclusions are subtle until you are trying to look for them, so it doesn't read too busy in real life. Heatheron40, very nice. I asked a question about doing a tile countertop in our guest cabin recently as I feel like the look would complement the cabin aesthetic. Also I’m dying to learn to tile and thought it would be a fun place to start as it’s not an everyday space and I could take my time. Most of the responses were against. Basically stating the grout would make me crazy. The guy at the said what you’re saying I think, he said that modern grouts are more resistant to staining and such, and also to go with a tinted grout of some sort. Do I go with same countertop on island ( Santa Cecília granite) or can I add a butcher counter top or black granite to the island? If so, what color can I paint the island, considering that I will repaint all of my cabinets? So that’s all my budget allows: get rid of the wall, new island and paint cabinets

get some traditional metal hardware on the cabinets.....space is traditional......handles are needed ... a nice focus. currently lacking this. then you dont have to paint the cabinets. island can take a nice slab of soapstone ...go look at those locally.....paint color for island would be darker or a darker stain on oak....very pleasing that way, and no painting.

@RoyHobbs, we are getting rid of a wall that divides our den and kitchen and we are replacing our current island with a bigger one with seating space.

If you're taking down walls, why not spend the money and replace your flooring? Removing a wall means you'll have to patch floors - just go ahead and replace the kitchen floor.

If modernizing, add hardware as suggested, but consider a simpler backsplash. Busy counters easily updated with a cleaner backsplash.
