The color scheme is totally neutral so your art can fit in or add a pop of color/interest. Do you plan for any further window treatments? If so, you want to allow room for a proper stack back of open draperies or stationary panels either side of the window frames. That would call for much slimmer art.

If no drapes are to be added, then art can fill 2/3 to 3/4 of the open wall space. I suggest you both shop for pieces you like that fill the size requirement. Then try to agree on just one of the pieces. Last step is to pick the frame. I don't see much "bling" in your space, so consider an accent metal color for the frame. Center the piece 5' above the floor.

Thank you for the feedback very much appreciated. Unfortunately no drapes as we spent a fortune on the blinds that are a linen like a drape material. I want a decorative piece but hubby prefers art work….so many designs items out there where to even start?

Sorry one more question…would you recommend family pix? We only have this space so trying to opt out of that and put family frames on the side tables and above fireplace - curious of your thoughts. Thanks.

I am not a fan of family photos on the wall in pubic spaces such as the living room or dining room. You can hang them on the wall in the hallway of your second floor, or on the wall of the stairway up to the second floor.

If you must, have one framed photo on a table in your living room.

As to a three-D decorative piece vs a 2-D art piece, don't you have more than one space to hang something in your living room?

Get one of each.

Go to local art fairs.

Some of the nicest things I have purchased I bought at local art shows/fairs that were sold by the artist that painted them.

In one case of a really big piece, the artist even came to my house and hung it for me at no charge! (and was I ever grateful, I was so worried that I or a handy man wouldn't do it correctly and it would fall and get damaged and/or damage the wall.)

I am very much in favor of not having all flat things, that is, not all 2-D art.

There are all sorts of things that I like that are three dimensional that I hang and display in various ways that makes for interesting things to look at.

You can try that too.

For example, textiles, architectural pieces, especially vintage ones are very interesting.

Very large vintage/antique mirrors are great.

(But no clocks, not ever, never! It puts people in mind of what time it is, and makes them feel rushed, and thinking about all the things they still need to get done.)

Think about your culture/heritage too, and what can you incorporate from that, it doesn't have to be something you inherited.

For example, look at this room done by well-known decorator Phoebe Howard, she often takes Indian screens or doors and turns them into mirrors. Isn't that just brilliant?

You buy art you love unless you live in a hotel . In fact I often decorate to go with my art not the other way around. We began collecting original art about 30 yrs ago our taste is very similar so not many arguments about choices. I do love to meet the artist so we have bought most of our pieces from gallery openings where the artists are on hand. We did find a couple of pieces at an art college and have continued to purchase other pieces from that same artist. We make it a fun outing when budget permits to go looking. Ther eis IMO no rush to add art. I like what I see of your space so wait until you find the perfect piece for there. BTW I love the dog we had one that looked almost exactly the same I still miss her.
