Remodeling Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Window in Shower

I have an existing window in a shower that is being completely demoed down to the studs. Want to redo the shower in tile and replace an existing window in the existing hole on an exterior wall. Window is 24"x46" and I am going to keep as the siding etc would be a big job to redo / make match. After looking at some options I'm confused at what I should be ordering to make sure I can get a good seal / waterproofing. I'm getting a non opening frosted glass with vinyl everything. I'm just not sure what to ask for / get for waterproofing. Some places have said they can do jamb extensions or without. Should I go with jamb extensions on inside/outside or both? Any suggestions on what to get to ensure a good way to seal with new tile on the inside while in the shower? Thanks!

Hoping youve made a smart hiring decision in regards to the tile professional I fear youve not if you are left wondering what to do and order.

Vinyl and fiberglass window flanges can be direct bonded to modern foam boards and fleece applied membranes with a modified silane based sealant. The tile then gets installed and the industry std expansion gap backfilled w 100% silicone

As long as you've demo'd down to the studs, I'd highly recommend putting in a clerestory window in the shower. You still get the light but get more privacy without having to do frosted glass or similar. Like this:

You are right, that is the best solution-if you are going to mostly store the shower curtain inside the tub. I'm only going to be using this for an occasional shower at, if at all so the shower curtain will usually be hanging on the outside of the tub. Even I even keep it hanging; I may just have the contractor install the rod and skip the curtain for now. Can anyone who showers with a rain shower help me??? Does the water splash less towards the back wall???

Our window were the typical glass pane. My husband sprayed them white so from the outside they look like shades. Yours are obviously different and you only want to do half. Looking at your examples I think neither choice is ideal. Since you do have other natural light, I personal would close them both in. For me, glass block is not particularly pretty. Added to having half of one window on that wall. I know people like to save windows at whatever cost. One of ours was a bathroom that we added using space from the back of our garage. We couldn’t keep the window and have an efficient layout. This was an extra bathroom for our oldest daughter. She absolutely loved it not having a window!

Replace the window with a vinyl window. Make sure the rough-in stool is sloped toward the tub 3-4 degrees is enough. Wrap Kerdi backer cloth into the window opening to seal any possible leaks. Tile up to the window over the Kerdi cloth.. Your contractor should know the detail of how this is done. We do it all the time. What are you going to do with the floor register? Why move the tuba at all? It looks nicely at home where it is. Moving it would be more work and expense than it is worth.

I currently have a casement window in my shower, and yes, it has a screen, and we do use it to vent after a shower. It is a vinyl casement and we trimmed it out (inside and out) with exterior composite trim material. My husband is a building contractor, and always mindful of issues. We towel down the trim EVERYTIME we shower, not so much for water rot worries, but for soap scum and water stains. Soap residue will show on any surface, whether or not the water air dries. It's great to have natural light in the shower, not to mention fresh air. Enjoy your shower window.

I have an existing window in my shower, it is a casement. I love being able to open following a shower for quick vent... and great natural light.

you wondered about the extensions, if you don't know what you need I will assume this is a DIY.

agree with @Mint tile Minneapolis and hire wisely.

My husband is a building contractor and in our 100 year old barn/house, we opted for exterior grade composite trim to trim out the window. (we tiled the entire wall, and added/fit the trim after the tile was installed. Caulk (neatly) of course, and wipe down the wall after you shower.

think it all through and get the best contractor you can.

We did glass block in our shower to replace an old wood window - our tiler was very, very careful with waterproofing around the window as well as angling the ledge tile away from the window so water didn't pool - I agree with the others that a pro is key
