Living room furniture problem

Please help with suggestions - how do I place my furniture in this 16x16 square foot living? This does not include the walkway to the bedrooms. Furniture has not been purchased yet. I am just trying to get an idea of how to layout the space. The tv will be placed in the corner by the fireplace.

With the traffic pattern leading to the hallway, this fireplace wall is off-centered in the room. You need to play up the symmetry of the fireplace wall.

Use a very large area rug centered on the fireplace wall. If the room is 16 feet wide the wall is probably around 11 or 12 feet wide. That means a 10x13 or 11x14 rug with 12" or so bare floor along the window wall and 12" from the hearth.

Center the coffee table on the rug with the seating arrangement around it. Place identical pieces on each side of the fireplace--console tables, a low bookcase or bookshelves, chests, etc. Twin lamps on each table.

Hang similar canvases on each side of the fireplace above the consoles. The fireplace would not need art in this scenario but a focal point, so something round or soft to soften the angles in the room, either a mirror there or some sort of wall piece, a brass sunburst, a woven tray, that sort of thing.

On the wall facing the window, a gallery wall of framed art with glass to reflect the light from the windows. I'm think hang the pieces in one row at the same height. That would be a nice look in this room. So, canvas art on the fireplace wall and glass art on the gallery wall.

I'll see if I can do a mock up for you but you get the idea.

Great suggestions tracefloyd! How should I arrange the furniture? I’d like a couch across from the fireplace and then chairs I think across from the window. Also, there will be a TV in the corner between the fireplace and window….I’m just worried that the space is too small for a couch and two chairs. I want to maximize seating as best as possible!

You might consider moving the sofa to be centered in front of the window and put the chair nearer the door adding a pony wall height bookshelf (with its back to the chair), with or without doors on the entry side, between the chair and the door to create an entry; perhaps something like this: http://thegamersforce.com/ikea-glass-door-bookcase/bookshelf-inspiring-low-bookcase-with-doors-bookcase-with-doors-ikea-dark-brown-bookcase-with-glass-glass-door-ikea-bookcase-singapore-ikea-glass-door-bookcase-ikea-billy-bookcase-glass-door-instruc/ A barrister style bookcase could also work. Great, thanks! I would use a round table that can extend to oval when you have company in the dining area, right over near the kitchen. One chair backing into the corner, rather than a chair with its back to the kitchen door. The desk can stay right where you have it in this photo. Sofa on the wall with the windows with a side table at each end. Two chairs across from it with a table between them. I sketched a pic but can't post comments on my phone, boo :(

I moved some things around and I think I like it better. I know the rug is too small and it shouldn't be "floating" but I don't want a new one until we get the other changes done. I moved the dresser into the dining room and hung (probably too high but couldn't convince 6'3" hubby to lower it and he had a point about being out of reach of the tornado. haha) the sign and pictures that had been on the mantle in the dining room. We also took off the ridiculous trim board they had up because we will be replacing the slider soon. So many things in this house like that silliness. I organized most of the books and moved the bookshelf. And grabbed a few canvases (I know they are small but can't remember where we left my big one) I did the flower, my dad painted the one on the right in Vietnam in '68. We need to fix the coffee table my dad built that's in the garage, I'll put it in front of the sofa, it's a little under 6'long, so it might be technically too big but, again, it's what I have. How'd I do?

Photos don't tell the whole story, but I don't think I'd put TV in that corner. It will likely crowd any window treatments. I would put it on the wall where the doors are leaning, or possibly on the wall right of the window if there is room (assuming you want to watch from the kitchen.) A "U" of seating might work well if the chairs are swivels. I'd use a 3-seat sofa with them, all centered on the FP. I like tracefloyd's idea of matching chests or consoles and art either side of the FP..
